Roblox has no single list of interchangeable “body types.” R6 and R15 are character rigs; avatar body type and proportion settings shape an R15 avatar; and Normal, Slender, and Classic are creator-facing sizing standards for imported character bodies. An experience may also limit which rig or appearance it allows.
What “body type” means in Roblox
The phrase can refer to three different things: the rig that controls how a character is assembled and moves, settings that change an avatar’s proportions, or standards creators use to size imported character models. They affect different parts of the experience, so R6, R15, Normal, Slender, and Classic should not be treated as five equivalent player avatar choices.
| Term | What it describes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| R6 | A legacy character rig made of six mesh objects. | Rig compatibility and movement. |
| R15 | A character rig made of 15 mesh objects. | More articulation, compatibility, and support for layerable clothing. |
| Body type and proportion | Appearance settings for an R15 character, including height, width, head, body type, and proportion. | The avatar’s silhouette and the limits an experience applies. |
| Normal, Slender, and Classic | Creator-facing body scale standards for imported character models. | Consistent sizing in a game or space. |
R6 vs. R15: what changes?
R6 and R15 name the character’s rig, not a particular body shape or gender. Roblox describes R6 as a six-mesh legacy rig and R15 as a 15-mesh rig with a broader range of motion. Roblox’s character-body documentation says standard R15 rigs require 15 poseable joints to articulate the character’s 15 body parts. Roblox’s Rig Generator overview explains the two rig types, while its character bodies documentation describes the R15 structure.
Which rig appears can depend on the experience. A creator can set a game to use R6, R15, or let the player’s website avatar setting determine the rig. Roblox defines those options in its GameAvatarType reference.

How avatar body shape and proportions work
On R15, appearance settings can adjust height, width, head size, body type, and proportion. Roblox describes the BodyTypeScale setting as moving the body from the standard R15 shape toward a taller, more slender shape as its value increases from 0 toward 1; values outside that interval are clamped. These are shape controls, distinct from the R6/R15 rig choice. Roblox’s character appearance guide and HumanoidDescription reference explain the scale settings. The documented scale settings do not affect R6.
What Normal, Slender, and Classic mean
Normal, Slender, and Classic are body scale standards in Roblox’s creator documentation for imported character bodies. Creators select the matching rig scale in the importer so a body is sized consistently for the game or space. They are not a complete list of player-facing avatar styles. See Roblox’s character body specifications for the standards and importer selections.

Why your avatar may look different in a game
An experience’s settings can affect both rig compatibility and appearance. Roblox Studio lets developers choose R6, R15, or both, and configure scale, appearance, and body build. The documented presets include “Player Choice” and “Consistent Gameplay”; developers can also set further controls. A game can therefore constrain which rig loads or how closely your avatar’s appearance follows your own settings. Roblox’s Avatar Settings documentation covers these options.
The Creator Hub gives reference heights of around 5 studs for classic-style avatars and around 6 to 6.5 studs for more humanoid proportions. These are creator-facing reference values in Avatar Settings, not measurements of how tall players’ avatars generally are.

How to change your Roblox avatar’s body
For a player, the practical route is Roblox’s avatar customization features and body packages in the Marketplace. Roblox Support points to free packages including Man, Woman, Roblox Girl, and Roblox Boy. These are appearance options, separate from the rig type a particular experience uses. The Support article How do I make my Avatar a girl or boy? explains the distinction: changing the account’s gender setting does not change the avatar’s visible appearance.
