“Holo” can mean a shiny foil finish, not one specific rarity. The quickest way to tell holo Pokémon cards apart is to check where the foil appears, then confirm the card’s official category and exact set number. A traditional holo rare shines in the illustration; a reverse holo—called “parallel foil” in Pokémon’s Scarlet & Violet terminology—has foil around the artwork. Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare are separate rarity labels, not synonyms for either finish.
What “holo” means on a Pokémon card
Collectors often use “holo” as shorthand for cards with a reflective finish. Official card catalogues also use specific rarity labels, such as Rare Holo, Illustration Rare and Hyper Rare. Those are not all names for the same foil treatment: rarity or card category and foil finish are different ways to describe a card. Pokémon’s official card database provides separate filters for card type and rarity.
There is no fixed all-time number of holo types. Official labels and finishes vary across sets and eras, and the database includes categories such as Amazing, Radiant Rare, Shiny Rare and Rare Holo alongside newer labels.
The main holo finishes and card categories
Holo rare: foil on the illustration
A traditional holo rare has a reflective foil treatment in the illustration area. “Holo rare” is also used as a specific checklist label. For example, the Shining Fates checklist distinguishes holo rare from Amazing rare, ultra rare and shiny rare. That makes holo rare one named category—not an umbrella that covers every shiny-looking card.

Reverse holo: foil around the illustration
A reverse holo typically has foil across the card area outside the main illustration, rather than foil in the illustration itself. Pokémon calls this treatment “parallel foil” in its Scarlet & Violet card design explanation: “As before, parallel foil cards will have a foil pattern surrounding the card artwork; in the Scarlet & Violet Series, this foil pattern is reminiscent of the tile designs of Paldea.” The pattern differs among expansions, so the appearance of one set is not a universal template.
Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare
These are official rarity labels, not alternative names for where foil sits. Pokémon describes Illustration Rare cards as alternate-art versions of common, uncommon and rare Pokémon, with full-art foil illustrations that can show the Pokémon’s personality or environment. Special Illustration Rare applies to alternate-art Pokémon ex or Supporter cards, also with full-art foil illustrations. The distinction is the named category and card design, not simply “more holo.”

Other named categories across sets
Pokémon’s database and set checklists use other labels, including Amazing, Radiant Rare, Shiny Rare, Shiny Ultra Rare and Hyper Rare. The Shining Fates checklist, for instance, distinguishes holo rare, Amazing rare, ultra rare, secret rare, shiny rare V/VMAX and shiny rare. A category name identifies a checklist classification; it does not guarantee that every card in that category uses an identical foil pattern.
How to identify a particular holo card
- Look at the foil placement. Is the reflective effect in the illustration, around it, or part of a full-art treatment? This gives you a useful visual description, but not necessarily the official rarity.
- Find the card number and expansion. Check the printed card number and identify the set. The same-looking Pokémon may have multiple cards or variants.
- Check the set checklist or official database entry. Confirm the official rarity/category and whether the checklist identifies a parallel-foil version. Do not infer rarity from shininess alone.
- Use the set’s terminology. A foil pattern or label may differ by era and expansion. Match the exact card number and set rather than relying only on a broad term such as “holo.”
Holo versus reverse holo at a glance
| Term | Where the foil is | What the term tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Holo rare | In the illustration area | A specific checklist label and a familiar foil treatment; not a name for every foil card. |
| Reverse holo / parallel foil | Typically around the illustration, across the surrounding card area | A foil finish or variant. Pokémon uses “parallel foil” in its Scarlet & Violet design explanation. |
| Illustration Rare / Special Illustration Rare | Full-art foil illustration treatment | Official rarity labels with distinct card categories; not simply foil-placement terms. |
Does a holo label tell you a card’s value?
No universal price ranking follows from these labels. Pokémon’s official design materials and card listings establish terminology and categories, not a market value for every card. A card’s exact identity—including set, number and variant—must be established before comparing listings; the label “holo” alone is not enough to establish price.

Are all rare Pokémon cards holo?
No. Foil rules depend on the set and era. In its 2023 Scarlet & Violet announcement, Pokémon said booster packs in that series would contain three guaranteed foil cards per booster and that cards of Rare or higher rarity would be foil. That is a Scarlet & Violet series statement, not a rule for every Pokémon TCG era or every current product.
