For creators, the useful takeaway is to treat these figures as clues about player intent, then build for a clear audience and a strong core loop.
What are the emerging game genres on Roblox?
In a July 2024 analysis, Roblox identified four areas where its platform searches suggested unmet demand: open-world action, sports, driving and racing, and social co-opetition. The company’s term “social co-opetition” describes play that mixes socializing and cooperation with competition—such as creating, voting, solving tasks, or playing games together.
Roblox reported these associated search counts for Q1 2024:

These are Roblox-reported historical search counts for Q1 2024, published in July that year. They are not current rankings, measures of how many people played a genre, or forecasts of a game’s success. A search signals interest; it does not establish that users will click, return, or spend.

What Roblox meant by “roleplaying”
Roblox also described roleplay/lifesim, battlegrounds, and platformers as established areas, and said horror was growing. Its use of “roleplaying” is platform-specific: as Roblox product executive Tian Lim put it, “When people talk about roleplaying games on Roblox, they mean something different from what the broader games industry considers an ‘RPG.’” Roblox’s roleplay/lifesim category often refers to social simulation, so it should not automatically be read as the traditional role-playing-game genre.
What genres are popular on Roblox now?
Roblox’s 2025 Replay offers a newer, but still platform-specific, view. For searches collected from January 1 through November 9, 2025, the company named Brookhaven, Grow a Garden, and Steal a Brainrot as the three most-searched experiences overall. Roblox said roleplaying and simulation games led that list, while search interest also spanned sports, horror, survival, shooters, and RPGs. Broad searches for “horror” and “roleplay” exceeded searches for individual experiences.

Examples Roblox highlighted across categories included Blue Lock: Rivals for sports, 99 Nights in the Forest for survival, RIVALS for shooters, and The Forge as a rising RPG search during the week of December 1, 2025. Replay’s overall top-three list and its later weekly RPG example cover different reporting windows.
Roblox said its top-search analysis used a 1% random sample of platform search data to provide a directional view. The Replay also reported two Ipsos online surveys, conducted in May and August 2025 among 1,600 U.S. Gen Z respondents aged 13–28 who had used Roblox within the previous 30 days. Those survey respondents should not be treated as representative of every Roblox user or market.

The Replay gives context, not a direct update to the Q1 2024 genre search counts: the publications cover different periods and use different descriptions of interest. Searches, concurrent users, and time engaged are also distinct measures. For example, Roblox reported that Grow a Garden reached 21.6 million concurrent users in July 2025 and that Steal a Brainrot exceeded 25 million concurrent users in September 2025. Those peak concurrency figures describe particular experiences at particular times, not the likely audience for a new game in the same genre.
How Roblox’s genre labels affect discovery
Genre is both a description for players and a discovery setting. Roblox says a game’s selected genre and optional subgenre appear on its main page and inform genre-specific top and trending sorts. The 2024 opportunity clusters do not necessarily map one-to-one to the genre and subgenre choices currently available in Creator Dashboard.

- In Creator Dashboard, choose the genre that best represents the experience’s primary purpose or core gameplay loop; select a subgenre if one fits.
- Make sure the label matches what players actually do in the experience. Roblox reviews genre accuracy and can change a selection it considers inaccurate.
- Plan carefully before changing it: Roblox permits a genre-selection change once every three months.
A precise label helps set player expectations, but the label alone does not demonstrate demand or determine whether an experience will be recommended.

Use the genre data to form a testable design idea, not to choose a category solely because its search count looks large. Roblox’s June 2026 explanation of Recommended For You says the system moved from a prior seven-day view to a 28-day view, with retention signals covering day 1, days 2–7, and days 8–28. Roblox also says it measures play-through behavior, session quality, and spending in more granular ways, and that creators can inspect signal importance and their own experience’s performance in Creator Analytics. These are Roblox’s descriptions of its recommendation system, not independent findings about the algorithm.

- Start with player intent: Decide what a player expects to do, then build a core loop that delivers on that expectation. A racing label, for example, should lead to meaningful driving and racing rather than merely placing cars in the world.
- Design for social play where it fits: Roblox’s opportunity descriptions include exploring with friends, cooperating, competing, and creating together. Social features should support the game’s loop rather than be added as decoration.
- Think beyond the first visit: Roblox says its discovery signals consider retention through day 28 and session quality. A concept needs reasons to return, not just an appealing search result.
- Consider audience and localization: Roblox’s 2024 analysis pointed to local sports teams and localized experiences. A concept grounded in a specific sport, place, or community may have a clearer identity for its intended audience.
- Match ambition to production capacity: Combat, sports simulation, driving systems, and higher-fidelity visuals require different capabilities. Choose a concept your team can execute well across the devices and platforms it intends to support.
Why Roblox is emphasizing shooters, RPGs, and sports or racing
Roblox’s FY2025 shareholder letter describes a corporate priority to broaden its appeal among older audiences through “Novel” games, with new genres, mechanics, and a different look and feel from classic Roblox experiences. It names shooters, RPGs, and sports/racing among priority markets and points to a technology roadmap intended to support higher-fidelity experiences across mobile, console, and PC. That strategy is separate from the 2024 search-based opportunity list, and neither one guarantees success for an individual creator.
What Roblox game should I make?
There is no genre in these figures that Roblox has established as a sure bet. Start with the overlap between a player need, a distinctive concept, and your team’s ability to deliver a satisfying experience. Then use Roblox’s analytics to evaluate how actual players respond, rather than treating a historical search count or a corporate priority as a verdict.
