Roblox users aged 13–15 who complete an age check are placed in the Roblox Select age group. They can access experiences rated up to Moderate, but communication features—including chat and voice—depend on age-check status, region, and account or parental settings. Turning 13 does not automatically enable every feature or remove parental controls.
What does “13+” mean on Roblox?
Roblox separates users into age groups. Age-checked users aged 13–15 are Roblox Select users; users aged 16 and older move to the standard Roblox account group. The age group can affect available experiences and features, and actual availability also depends on region and settings. See Roblox’s age-check guidance and its age-check rollout information.
The age check is tied to communication access; it is not a requirement to play Roblox generally. Roblox lists facial age estimation and ID verification as age-check methods. Its current chat guidance says phone verification is not a valid way to unlock Voice Chat under the updated requirements.
Does Roblox require age verification to chat?
Yes. Roblox requires an age check to access its communication features. After that, what a user can do depends on the type of chat, their age group, region, and account settings. Roblox says age-checked users can communicate with people in similar age groups and with Trusted Friends. For 13–15-year-olds, the Safety Center describes Chat tab access with Trusted Friends and friends in a similar age group; current chat guidance says users under 16 need parental consent to enable Direct chat. Regional restrictions can also apply. See Roblox’s chat guidance and its Safety Center.

Chat features are not all the same
- Experience chat: Chat within an experience is subject to Roblox’s applicable communication settings and filtering.
- Direct chat: Users under 16 need parental consent to enable Direct chat, according to Roblox’s current chat help page.
- Party Chat: This is distinct from in-game Voice Chat. Roblox’s Safety FAQ says unfiltered messages are available only to users aged 13+ in direct Party Chat with Trusted Friends.
- Developer-built tools: Some communication features created independently by experience developers may not be governed by Roblox parental communication settings.
Can 13-year-olds use voice chat on Roblox?
Sometimes, but turning 13 does not automatically grant Voice Chat. In-game Voice Chat is available only in supported regions and is off by default for Roblox Select users. A parent can enable it for a 13–15-year-old through parental controls where the feature is supported. Age-checked users aged 13 or older in supported regions can use Voice Controls in compatible games. Voice calling and in-game Voice Chat are separate features, so eligibility for one does not establish access to the other. Roblox explains the current feature rules in its Safety Center, chat guidance, and Safety FAQ.
Is Roblox chat filtered for 13+?
Filtered chat remains the default for eligible communication. Roblox’s Safety FAQ says users aged 13 and older can send unfiltered messages only with Trusted Friends in direct Party Chat, and those conversations are still proactively monitored for child endangerment. Unfiltered messaging is therefore a narrow exception, not a general setting that removes chat protections. Roblox also advises users not to share personal information or move conversations off-platform, and provides ways to report or block users and content. See the Safety FAQ and Safety Center.

What can parents control for a 13-year-old?
A linked parent account can manage several Roblox settings for a teen, including content maturity, particular allowed or blocked games, chat, Party participation, private-server visibility, and friends. Roblox’s age-check guidance and teen transition guidance explain how account age and controls interact.
- Parents can lower the content maturity level or allow and block specific experiences.
- They can adjust communication settings and manage Party participation and private-server visibility.
- They can view, block, or report friends.
- Roblox says parental communication settings do not apply to chat features developers build independently inside experiences.
At 13, teens begin managing some account information, such as email and phone, and communication features such as Voice and Party Chat after an age check unless a parent restricts them. Roblox says spending limits stop applying at 13, although parents can continue to receive spending notifications. Roblox recommends that families discuss who a teen talks to, what they share, and why moving conversations to another app can remove platform protections. Its Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman wrote in Roblox’s May 20, 2026 family guidance: “The best tool any parent has is to talk to their child, so we provide specialized guides developed with child development experts to help parents navigate these conversations.”

What content can Roblox Select users access?
Roblox Select users can access experiences rated up to Moderate under Roblox’s age-based framework. Parents can set a lower maturity level or allow or block specific games. Restricted experiences are reserved for users aged 18 or older who have completed age verification. A maturity label describes Roblox’s content rating; it does not establish that a game is right for every teen. Roblox’s Safety Center and age-check guidance describe these age-based limits.
How to check a teen’s Roblox setup
- Confirm the age group and age-check status. Review the account’s age and age-check information in Roblox settings. Roblox lists facial age estimation and ID verification for age checks; availability and settings may vary by region.
- Review communication permissions. Check the linked parental controls and the account’s chat settings. For users under 16, parental consent is needed to enable Direct chat.
- Decide separately about voice. Check whether in-game Voice Chat is supported in the user’s region, then review parental controls. It is off by default for Roblox Select users.
- Set content limits. Choose an appropriate content maturity level and allow or block specific experiences as needed.
- Discuss privacy and reporting. Agree on what personal information should stay private, why conversations should not be moved off Roblox casually, and how to block or report a user or content that raises concern.
Age-estimation figures should not be mistaken for certainty about an individual. Roblox reports that Persona’s age-estimation models had a 1.4-year mean absolute error for minors under 18, based on testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme; Roblox’s page does not specify the test year. This is a model evaluation result, not a guarantee of a particular user’s estimated age. See Roblox’s age-check page.
