For valid housing in Terraria, build a closed room with valid background walls and 60–749 total tiles, counting the frame. Add a qualifying light source, flat-surface item, comfort item, and entrance, and leave a valid tile for the NPC to stand on. Then use the housing query to see whether the room passes—or what needs fixing.
What does a room need to qualify as housing?
- 60–749 total tiles: Count the room’s frame as well as its interior. The minimum is 60; 750 is already too large.
- A closed frame: The room must be separated from the outside. Solid blocks and platforms that are not actuated can form the frame; doors, trap doors, and tall gates can also count under the documented rules. For doors and gates, their closed position forms the frame.
- Valid background walls: The interior needs wall coverage that counts for housing. Naturally occurring unsafe walls, such as Dirt Walls, do not qualify.
- Four item categories: Include a valid light source, a flat-surface item, a comfort item, and an entrance.
- A place to stand: There must be a valid home tile where the NPC can stand.
These rules are described by the Official Terraria Wiki’s House guide. Its page applies broadly to Desktop, Console, and Mobile, though some housing-query details are version-specific.
How do you make a simple qualifying room?
A straightforward starter combination is a Torch for light, a Work Bench for the flat surface, a Chair for comfort, and a Wood Platform for the entrance. These are examples, not the only valid choices: the room needs an item from each category, and the light must specifically count as a housing light.
- Build a closed frame sized to contain at least 60 and fewer than 750 tiles, including the frame.
- Cover the interior with valid background walls. Replace unsafe natural walls with walls that count for housing.
- Place a qualifying light, flat-surface item, comfort item, and entrance inside the room.
- Make sure there is a valid tile where the NPC can stand.
- Use the housing query to check the room and follow its status message if it fails.
How is room size counted?
The size limit applies to the total number of tiles in the room, including the frame—not just the open floor area. The Wiki lists these rectangular dimensions as minimum examples, with dimensions counting the outside frame:

These are examples rather than mandatory shapes; housing does not have to be rectangular. The underlying limit is 60 or more and fewer than 750 total tiles.
Why might a room still fail the housing check?
The room is too small or too big
The message “This room is too small” or “This room is too big” points to the frame-inclusive total. Recount the entire room, including its boundaries, and keep the total between 60 and 749 tiles.

A wall is missing or unsafe
“This room is missing a wall” means background-wall coverage needs attention. The documented rule allows wall holes no more than four tiles wide or four tiles high; larger gaps can invalidate the room and may let enemies spawn inside. “Natural walls in this room need replacing!” means unsafe natural walls, such as Dirt Walls, must be replaced with valid placed walls. An item category is missing—or the light does not count
The query may report: “This house is missing a light source, a door, a table, and a chair.” Check that the room contains an item for every required category: light, flat surface, comfort, and entrance. Some objects emit light without qualifying as housing lights; solid blocks, platforms, and walls do not satisfy the light requirement.

There is no valid tile for the NPC to stand on
“This room has no space to stand in!” indicates a home-tile problem rather than a missing furniture category. Adjust the interior so a valid place to stand remains. The Official Terraria Wiki’s Room guide documents the standing-tile requirement. The Housing menu guide records that Desktop 1.4.5.0 added a query message for this case and relaxed some home-tile requirements; that version history should not be read as a claim that every platform has identical interface details.
The query reports corrupted housing
“This housing is corrupted.” is an additional diagnosis associated with too much nearby evil-biome influence, rather than one of the basic construction requirements.

How do you use the housing query?
Open the housing menu, select the housing query, then click or use it inside the room. Its status tells you whether the room is suitable or identifies the category that failed. The documented messages include size, wall, furniture, standing-space, and corrupted-housing diagnoses. If the interface or wording differs on your platform, use the result shown in your game as the guide for your next repair.
