The PS4 controller is Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4. Its controls include the D-pad, four action buttons, SHARE, OPTIONS and PS buttons, a touch pad, two sticks that click as L3 and R3, and shoulder buttons and triggers labeled L1/L2 and R1/R2.

For visual identification, find the D-pad on the left and the four-symbol action cluster on the right. The SHARE, PS and OPTIONS controls sit around the touch pad in the middle. L1 and R1 are on the top edge; L2 and R2 are the larger triggers behind them.
What do L3 and R3 mean?
L3 and R3 are not extra buttons placed elsewhere. They mean clicking the left stick and right stick, respectively: press a stick straight down until it clicks. The sticks can also move in different directions, so the names refer to the pressable action as well as identifying which stick is involved.
Are L1 and R1 different from L2 and R2?
Yes. L1 and R1 are the upper shoulder buttons. L2 and R2 are the lower triggers, positioned behind them on the top edge. The L labels identify controls on the left side; the R labels identify controls on the right.

What are the triangle, circle, cross and square buttons called?
Sony groups the four right-side symbols as the action buttons. Their names are triangle (△), circle (○), cross (×) and square (□). Some players casually call the cross “X,” but “cross” is the PlayStation button name.
Do the buttons always do the same thing?
No. These are the controls’ names and locations; what each one does depends on the game and its control settings. For PS4 controller settings, Sony directs users to Settings > Devices > Controllers. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 manual also documents basic use, pairing and charging. Its support instructions call the center logo control the PS button; pressing it turns on the controller, and holding it opens the Quick Menu, where you can check the battery indicator.

Does a standard PS4 controller have rear buttons?
No. The standard DUALSHOCK 4 does not have built-in rear buttons. Sony’s separate DUALSHOCK 4 back button attachment manual describes an accessory that adds two programmable buttons and is compatible only with the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. Its assignments can include △, ○, ×, □, directional inputs, L1/R1, L2/R2, L3/R3 and OPTIONS; it is an add-on, not part of the standard controller. See Sony’s attachment support page for details.
