There is no proven single strongest damage spell in Elden Ring. The answer changes depending on whether you mean damage from one cast, damage over time, or damage you can reliably land in a real fight. Against a large target that stays in range, Meteorite of Astel is a conditional multi-hit standout; Comet Azur can deliver a powerful burst when you have time and space to cast; and Night Comet can be more dependable against some enemies that evade ordinary projectiles. None is established as the universal winner.
How to judge a spell’s damage
A spell’s maximum damage in ideal conditions is not necessarily its best damage in a boss fight. A useful comparison separates the damage a cast can produce from the damage you can actually land and repeat.

- Burst: How much damage can one cast deal if it connects fully?
- Sustained damage: How much damage can you keep dealing over time, including time spent casting and recovering?
- Practical damage: How often can you complete the cast and hit a moving or evasive target?
- Build and defenses: Your stats, equipment, buffs, FP supply, and the enemy’s defenses all affect the result. Damage type matters too: Meteorite of Astel is described as dealing both physical and magic damage.
A defensible ranking would need to hold those conditions constant: the same game version, build, target, range, buffs, and measurement method. No matched current comparison across sorceries and incantations establishes a numerical winner.
Conditional standouts for damage
Meteorite of Astel: repeated hits on a suitable target
Meteorite of Astel is a strong candidate when a large or stationary target gives its meteors a chance to connect repeatedly. Eldenpedia describes each meteorite as dealing physical damage equal to 185% of staff Sorcery Scaling and magic damage equal to 105% of staff Sorcery Scaling. Those are community-reference figures, not a publisher-issued comparison or proof of total damage in a particular fight; the number of impacts that land is crucial. The figures and spell description are on Eldenpedia’s Meteorite of Astel reference.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
Its casting time was reduced in version 1.17, but that change alone does not establish that it outdamages other spells. The spell’s practical value still depends on whether you can complete the cast and keep the target in its area.
Comet Azur: burst when you can safely set up
Comet Azur is a beam with multiple damage instances and can perform well when you have enough room and time to cast. That makes it a situational burst option rather than a dependable answer for every encounter: a target that moves, interrupts you, or leaves the beam can sharply limit the damage you actually deal. A surfaced guide discusses its high-damage potential and need for space and time, but no current matched-build test establishes its standing against Meteorite of Astel or other spells. See the Comet Azur reference.
Rank #3
- Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5
Night Comet: reliability against some evasive PvE enemies
A 2025 guide describes PvE enemies as not reacting to Night Comet in the same way they evade ordinary visible projectiles. That can make it a practical choice against some evasive foes. It is a reliability advantage, not evidence that Night Comet has the highest raw damage. The claim is discussed in GamesRadar’s Night Comet guide.
Impenetrable Thorns: a build-dependent bleed option
A 2025 guide presents Impenetrable Thorns as a high-damage, bleed-oriented sorcery and discusses Arcane-scaling staves and other build choices. Treat that as qualitative build advice, not a measured version 1.17 ranking: the available material does not provide controlled current results showing how it compares with the other candidates. See PC Gamer’s Impenetrable Thorns guide.

Comet: an efficient repeat-casting candidate, not a proven top spell
Patch 1.03 reduced Comet’s FP consumption and increased its damage. That historical adjustment is useful context for a spell you may cast repeatedly, but it does not establish Comet’s current position against the conditional burst or multi-hit options above. The change is recorded in the Comet reference.
What version 1.17 changes—and what it does not
Bandai Namco’s official version 1.17 notes, dated 27 August 2026, describe the app and regulation update and list several sorcery adjustments relevant to damage use:
Best Value
- ELDEN RING, developed by FromSoftware Inc. and produced by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc., is a fantasy action-RPG and FromSoftware's largest game to date, set within a world full of mystery and peril
- Journey through the Lands Between, a new fantasy world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the influential DARK SOULS video game series, and George R. R. Martin, author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire
- Traverse the breathtaking world on foot or on horseback, alone or online with other players, and fully immerse yourself in the grassy plains, suffocating swamps, spiraling mountains, and foreboding castles
- Create your character in FromSoftware’s refi ned action-RPG and defi ne your playstyle by experimenting with a wide variety of weapons, magical abilities, and skills found throughout the world
- Charge into battle, pick off enemies one-by-one using stealth, or even call upon allies for aid - many options are at your disposal as you decide how to approach exploration and combat
- Founding Rain of Stars: power increased.
- Meteorite and Meteorite of Astel: casting time reduced.
- Gravitational Missile: its gravity projectile no longer immediately explodes after striking terrain such as a wall or the ground.
These notes document changes, not a full spell ranking. They do not identify an overall strongest damage spell. The patch note’s stated aim was to support the Tarnished Pack DLC, scheduled for release on Friday, 28 August 2026, and implement gameplay balance adjustments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing the right spell for your fight
- Can the target stay in the spell’s area? If so, Meteorite of Astel’s repeated impacts may make it a worthwhile damage option.
- Can you safely spend time channeling? If you have space and a controlled target, Comet Azur may deliver strong burst damage.
- Does the enemy evade standard projectiles? Night Comet may be more reliable against some such PvE enemies.
- Is your build designed around bleed? Impenetrable Thorns may fit, but its performance depends on build choices and is not established here by current comparative testing.
- Do you need to cast repeatedly? Consider FP cost and how long you can keep attacking; no unified current cost-efficiency comparison is available for these spells.
For PvP or mobile enemies, the same practical question applies: can the spell connect often enough to justify its casting time and FP use? The available comparisons do not establish a universal answer for those situations either.
