The most likely intended reference is the traditional account of a thousand Buddhas associated with the present auspicious, or Wise, Kalpa—especially the Mahāyāna scripture called the Bhadrakalpikasūtra. It refers to a succession of Buddhas, not one person or object.
The thousand Buddhas of the present kalpa
A kalpa is an immense period of time in Buddhist cosmology. The Nichiren Buddhism Library’s Dictionary of Buddhism, “Wise Kalpa” entry, identifies the Wise Kalpa with the present major kalpa and says the Wise Kalpa Sutra describes a thousand Buddhas, listing their names.
In that reference’s account, Krakucchanda, Kanakamuni, Kāshyapa, and Śākyamuni have already appeared. It says 996 more are to appear successively, beginning with Maitreya and ending with Ruchika. This is a traditional textual account; it should not be treated as a universal formulation shared identically by every Buddhist source.
What the Bhadrakalpikasūtra says
The Bhadrakalpikasūtra, also known as the Auspicious Eon Scripture or Good Eon Sutra, is a Mahāyāna text in 24 chapters. Tsadra Foundation’s Buddhist Studies Glossary entry says it presents the Buddha teaching a special concentration and lists a thousand Buddhas, with details including their residences, parents, disciples, spiritual powers, and teachings.

Other Buddhist uses of thousand-based language
“A thousand Buddhas” can refer to different textual scopes, so the kalpa named by a source matters.

One thousand in each of three kalpas
The Nichiren Buddhism Library’s “Three Kalpas” entry describes the Names of Three Thousand Buddhas Sutra as listing a thousand Buddhas in each of three kalpas: the past Glorious Kalpa, the present Wise Kalpa, and the future Constellation Kalpa. That three-kalpa framing is broader than an account focused only on the present kalpa.
The “three thousand great thousand worlds”
The phrase “three thousand great thousand worlds” is a separate cosmological expression, not another name for the thousand Buddhas. The Nichiren Buddhism Library’s “Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds” entry explains it through successive groupings by thousands to describe a great-world system.

Why accounts should not be collapsed into one
BDK America’s Zen Texts (2005) includes a note cautioning that a discourse naming earlier Buddhas does not itself say that a thousand Buddhas appear. The note discusses later material describing three thousand Buddhas across past, present, and future kalpas. The distinction is a reminder to identify the particular text and time-span behind a count rather than assume all Buddhist sources make the same claim.

For readers who want to explore the scripture itself, the Tsadra glossary names two English translations: The Good Eon: Bhadrakalpika, translated by Thomas Doctor of the Dharmacakra Translation Committee and published by 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha; and The Fortunate Aeon: How the Thousand Buddhas Become Enlightened, a four-volume translation by Dharma Publishing staff.
