It provides a hub for networking and education. The RSA Good Work Guild is another guild-like example, bringing together people working on the future of work.
What makes an organization a modern guild?
Modern guilds are not all one kind of organization. The term can describe a member-led professional community built around a shared field, or a group that brings people together to learn, collaborate, or advocate around shared work-related challenges.
That resemblance is organizational, not necessarily legal. The RSA describes historical guilds as associations of craftspeople that could protect trade traditions and pursue legal monopolies. The examples below share features such as common interests, peer support, and collective activity, but the available descriptions do not establish that they have those historical legal powers or follow one standard model.
Examples of modern guild-like organizations
Cooperative Professionals Guild: a professional network
The Cooperative Professionals Guild is the closest fit for someone looking for a professional guild. It focuses on people with legal and accounting expertise who serve cooperative businesses and social enterprises. The group began as an informal collective in 2013 and later moved toward a member-governed nonprofit association. Its stated functions include networking and education.

RSA Good Work Guild: a collaboration initiative
Launched in September 2021, the RSA Good Work Guild convenes practitioners, advocates, and social entrepreneurs working on future-of-work issues. Its focus includes economic security and labor-market change. It is best understood as an initiative for collaboration and learning, rather than assumed to be a professional association with the same structure as the Cooperative Professionals Guild.
U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives: a related federation
Founded in 2004, the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives connects worker cooperatives and democratic workplaces through membership and advocacy. It is a federation, not a guild in the narrow sense, but it illustrates how organizations can support and represent people working within a shared economic model.

CoTech: a cooperative technology network
CoTech (Cooperative Technologists) is a UK network of worker-owned technology and digital service cooperatives. It says it was founded in 2016 and became a sector-specific arm of workers.coop in September 2024. Its cooperative-network structure makes it related to guilds in some respects, but it is not a professional guild in the narrow sense.

What the word “guild” does—and does not—tell you
Calling a group a guild does not, by itself, tell you who may join, how it is governed, or what powers it has. Check whether it is a professional association, a project hosted by another organization, a federation, or a cooperative network. Those distinctions matter more than the label when you want to understand what members actually do together.
