For ordinary walking mobs, fences are a dependable basic barrier. Open trapdoors can also help direct mobs into a pit because their pathfinding may treat the opening as safe. Neither works as a universal guarantee: flying, jumping, door-opening, and other entity-specific behaviors can bypass what looks like a solid boundary.
Which blocks are useful barriers?
Fences for ordinary ground mobs
Fences are a practical boundary for ordinary walking mobs. Minecraft Wiki community tutorials describe mobs as unable to pass over fences without jump boost and describe fence height as 1.5 blocks. For a base boundary, use fences or walls, then check the whole perimeter: corners, gates, roofs, and nearby terrain can create routes around the barrier. A ground-level fence alone does not make an area secure against flying threats; the community tutorial names withers, ghasts, and phantoms as examples that can still enter a fenced area.
Open trapdoors for directing mobs into drops
Open trapdoors are commonly used over pits in mob traps. The idea is not that a trapdoor forms an impassable wall: mobs may pathfind as though the opening is safe, walk toward it, and fall through. The cited community tutorial says mobs do not jump over open trapdoors, but this is a pathfinding technique rather than a universal physical rule. Check it with the mob and game edition you are using before relying on it.

Why there is no universal “mob-proof” block
“Cannot go over” can mean two different things: a mob is physically unable to cross a block, or its AI does not choose a path across or around it. Open trapdoor traps rely on the second kind of behavior. A mob’s movement options also vary by entity, so a barrier that works against a normal walker may fail against a flyer or a mob with unusual jumping or door behavior.
Microsoft’s official Bedrock walk-navigation reference, last updated March 5, 2026, documents configurable navigation capabilities such as can_jump, can_open_doors, can_break_doors, blocks_to_avoid, and can_path_over_water. It gives different settings for entities including a Blaze, Bogged, Breeze, Chicken, and Cow. The Breeze example includes a blocks_to_avoid tag matching trapdoors. This is evidence of entity-specific navigation in Bedrock, not a universal list of blocks that every mob cannot cross, and it should not be treated as a Java Edition mechanics reference.

Choose the barrier for the threat and goal
- Keeping ordinary ground mobs out: Try fences or walls, and inspect the perimeter for gates, corners, roof access, and adjacent terrain that could bypass them.
- Keeping flying mobs out: Do not treat a ground fence as a complete enclosure; it does not stop a threat that can fly over or into it.
- Building a mob farm: Open trapdoors over a drop can encourage mobs to walk into a pit. The method depends on pathfinding, so verify it for the target mob and version.
- Investigating an unexpected crossing: Identify the mob, whether you are playing Java or Bedrock, the game version, and whether mods or custom entity behavior are involved. In Bedrock, navigation settings can be configured per entity.
The cited fence and trapdoor advice comes from Minecraft Wiki community tutorials, not a comprehensive current test table for every mob in Java and Bedrock. For an edge case, treat the specific mob and game version as decisive rather than assuming a block is an absolute barrier.
