Glass and iron bars let light through in Minecraft, and so do most other blocks that look transparent. But “transparent” describes what you can see, not always how much light gets past. Leaves and water weaken skylight, and tinted glass is a visual exception: player reports describe it as blocking light even though it looks clear. Opaque blocks such as dirt and sandstone stop light completely.
Why “transparent” and “light-transmitting” are different tests
The Minecraft Wiki’s general overview separates blocks by their effect on light. Opaque blocks completely block light. Transparent blocks, by contrast, can have no effect on light, can block block light, or can weaken light. A block can therefore look clear and still change how light behaves in a space.
Before choosing a block, decide which question you are answering. “Can I see the room on the other side?” is about visibility. “Does daylight reach the space behind this?” is about skylight, which enters from above. “Will my torches light the area through this?” is about block light, which comes from light-emitting blocks. Sources distinguish these effects, and a block’s effect on one does not automatically tell you its effect on the other.
Which common blocks let light through
The table below lists the light behavior each source states for common blocks. Where a source does not address a behavior, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Glass and iron bars are the clearest choices if you want daylight to pass unchanged. Leaves and water are see-through in appearance but reduce the skylight that reaches the area behind them, so they suit a softer, dimmer effect rather than a clear window.
What the 0 to 15 light_dampening value means
Microsoft’s Bedrock block-component documentation, updated on 22 June 2026, defines the minecraft:light_dampening component as an amount from 0 to 15. Higher values dampen light more. A value of 0 is fully transparent, like glass, and 15 is fully opaque, like stone. The documentation’s format version 1.26.20 validates this component as an integer from 0 to 15 inclusive. Its examples assign leaves a value of 1 and water a value of 2.

This scale belongs to Bedrock custom blocks. It is useful for reasoning about how a custom block should behave in an add-on, but it is not a complete table of vanilla blocks for every edition. Do not read the leaf and water values as universal game constants for Java Edition.
- Use 0 when the custom block should pass light like clear glass.
- Use values between 1 and 14 when the block should weaken light without blocking it entirely.
- Use 15 when the block should stop light like stone.
Tinted glass: treat appearance as unreliable
Tinted glass is the block most likely to mislead a builder. It looks transparent, but a player discussion on r/Minecraft describes it as blocking light. The sources reviewed here do not confirm exact behavior for every edition and version, so do not design a lighting plan around it until you have tested it in your own world.

A simple test is to place a light source behind the block and check whether the space on the other side is lit. In Java Edition, the F3 debug screen shows light levels for the block you are standing in, which makes this check more precise. Bedrock Edition does not offer the same debug readout, so rely on visual testing there.
Choosing blocks for a lit build
Match the block to the effect you want:
- A clear window for daylight: glass adds no light reduction, which makes it the most direct choice.
- A grille or barrier that keeps daylight unchanged: iron bars have no effect on skylight, while still giving a partly open look.
- A see-through screen with softer, dimmer light: leaves or water weaken skylight rather than blocking it.
- A visually transparent barrier that keeps an area dark: test tinted glass in your edition first, since player reports describe it as blocking light.
Many builders ask how to light a space through a transparent wall without the result looking awkward. One r/Minecraft player put it this way: “is there any way i could get full proper lighting through this whole space without it looking bad??” The practical answer is to separate the two problems. Choose the block for its light behavior, then place light sources where they are needed, and choose the visual finish afterward.

Where the evidence stops
- The sources do not provide a complete per-block list for both Java and Bedrock editions. Name your edition and game version when checking exact behavior.
- The Minecraft Wiki overview is a useful general reference, but it is flagged as needing updates, so confirm recent details against current game behavior.
- Some fine-grained light details come from secondary references rather than direct testing. Treat edge cases, especially tinted glass and mixed-light situations, as points to verify in your own world.
Microsoft’s documentation is the primary source for the Bedrock custom-block scale. It describes custom-block behavior and does not establish how every vanilla block behaves.
