In vanilla Minecraft, Endermen can pick up only the blocks on a fixed list. Any block not on that list is not pickupable, including stone, ores, wooden planks, chests, and bedrock. The list works as a whitelist, so a block’s weight or appearance does not decide whether an Enderman can take it. Position, world settings, and datapacks can also change what happens in a given world.
The vanilla pickup list
The Minecraft Wiki’s Enderman article (hosted on Fandom) lists the blocks that vanilla Endermen can pick up:
- Cactus
- Clay
- Coarse dirt
- Rooted dirt
- Dirt
- Short flowers
- Fungi
- Roots
- Grass block
- Gravel
- Melon
- Moss block
- Mud
- Muddy mangrove roots
- Mushrooms
- Mycelium
- Nylium
- Podzol
- Pumpkins
- Red sand
- Sand
- TNT
The wiki is community-maintained and its snapshot may lag the newest release. Confirm the list in your own game version before relying on it for a build or a server rule.
What the list means for blocks that are not on it
Because the list is a whitelist, a block that is not named on it is not eligible, even if it looks like a loose or lightweight block. Stone, ores, wood planks, chests, and bedrock are all absent from the list, so they are not pickupable in vanilla play. The list mixes soft ground blocks such as dirt, sand, and gravel with several plant and fungus blocks. Those groupings are not a general property that would let a reader predict new cases. A similar-looking block should be checked against the list, not assumed to qualify.

Position still matters
Eligibility is only the first condition. The Minecraft Wiki describes a 4×3×4 pickup region that is centered horizontally on the Enderman and extends vertically around it. It also states that an Enderman cannot pick up blocks in a completely flat area. An eligible block next to an Enderman is therefore not guaranteed to be taken, and the surrounding terrain affects the result.
Microsoft Learn’s Unique Entity Behaviors documentation (last updated 2024-11-07) confirms that Endermen “can teleport, pick up and place blocks, and are only hostile when looked at directly.” It does not list which blocks qualify, so the wiki list is the source for that detail.
Edition and version differences
Pickup rules are not identical across every edition and release. The table below separates what the sources establish from what they do not.
Rank #2
- BUILD THE DREADED CREEPER – Young explorers, ages 10 and up, build a large poseable version of the iconic Minecraft mob
- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element
- POSEABLE ROOM DECOR – After building, kids can put their creation on display in the bedroom or playroom
- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – Makes a wonderful birthday or any-time gift idea for boys and girls
| Situation | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| Java Edition, vanilla | Pickup is limited to the blocks in the list above, as documented on the Minecraft Wiki. |
| Bedrock Edition before 1.21.100 | Not stated. The sources reviewed do not list the earlier Bedrock set of pickupable blocks. |
| Bedrock Edition, 1.21.100 | Official Minecraft changelog: “Endermen can now pick up all block types they are able to in Java Edition.” |
| Java Edition with datapacks | Datapacks can change the minecraft:enderman_holdable block tag, so the vanilla list may not apply. |
The 1.21.100 statement is a parity update, not a claim that Endermen can pick up every block. Bedrock Endermen match the block types that Java Endermen can pick up. Blocks outside the Java list stay outside it.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Modified worlds and datapacks
Any world that uses datapacks or add-ons should be checked before the vanilla list is applied to it.
- Confirm whether the world has a datapack installed that edits block tags.
- Look for changes to the
minecraft:enderman_holdableblock tag. - Note the game version, since tag contents and pickup behavior can differ between releases.

Build with blocks outside the list
The simplest approach is to use building materials that are not on the vanilla pickup list, such as stone or planks. Before committing to a material, check it against the list for your version and confirm that no datapack has changed the tag.
Turn off mob griefing
The mobGriefing game rule set to false stops Endermen from picking up or placing blocks. This is a world-wide rule that affects mob griefing behavior in general, so it changes more than Enderman pickups. The steps below use Java Edition command syntax, and this article does not verify the equivalent Bedrock control.
