In a Roblox experience that supports Voice Chat, click the headphone icon to connect. Once you are connected, the microphone icon mutes and unmutes you. The two icons do different jobs, and confusing them is the most common reason players think voice is broken. If the headphone icon is missing, the experience may not support Voice Chat, or your account may not yet be eligible.
How to connect to voice chat
- Check eligibility first. Your account must meet Roblox’s age requirement and complete an age check. The requirements are covered in the eligibility section below.
- Join an experience that supports Voice Chat. Voice is not switched on everywhere. Each developer decides whether their experience integrates it, so check the experience description if you are unsure.
- Connect. Click the headphone icon. If you do not see it, open the in-experience settings and use the Voice Chat toggle instead. Roblox’s how-to article gives in-experience settings as the connection route on PlayStation.
- Control your mic. Tap or click the microphone icon in the upper-left of the screen. A red slash means you are muted; tap or click again to unmute. You can also mute and unmute at the device level, which is useful if you prefer to control your headset or system audio directly.
Roblox’s help articles describe these controls by icon and settings name rather than by a physical keyboard key or controller button. Placement can vary between devices and between experiences, so look for the icon or the settings toggle rather than a fixed button.
Headphone icon versus microphone icon
Most confusion comes from treating the two icons as one control. The table separates what each one changes.

Why the control may be missing
If you cannot find the headphone icon or the Voice Chat toggle, work through these checks in order:

- Your age check is incomplete. Voice Chat requires an age check, so an account that has not finished it will not see the feature.
- The experience has not enabled voice. Eligibility alone does not make voice appear. The developer has to support it.
- Voice Chat is not available in your region. Some regions do not offer the feature, and availability can also vary by account.
- The setting is off. Voice Chat is not enabled by default, so the first connection may require you to turn it on.
Eligibility and age checks
Roblox says users must be at least 13 and complete an age check to use Voice Chat. For first-time setup, Roblox’s current instructions direct users to verify their identity or complete Facial Age Estimation. Phone verification does not grant Voice Chat access under the process Roblox describes. Verification methods and Voice Chat itself may not be available to every account or in every region, so if the options you see differ from these, follow what the app shows you.
Platform differences
Roblox’s Voice FAQ lists Voice Chat availability on Desktop, Mobile, VR, PlayStation, and Xbox. The how-to article gives in-experience settings as the PlayStation connection route. Do not assume every platform places the headphone icon, the settings toggle, or the microphone icon in the same spot. Check the screen in front of you, and if an experience’s layout differs, use its settings menu.

Recording indicator and conduct rules
When Voice Chat is active, the microphone shows a red dot when Roblox is recording audio. Using Voice Chat does not change your obligations: you remain subject to Roblox’s Terms of Use and Community Standards while speaking in an experience. If you do not want to be heard, mute with the microphone icon before you talk rather than relying on memory during a fast match.

Roblox’s instructions do not say a separate headset is required. A headset with a microphone is an optional convenience for players who want clearer audio input or who want to mute at the device level. Any headset will work with the controls described above as long as your device recognises it.
