Which charger does a Nintendo DSi use?
Look for a Nintendo DSi AC adapter, model WAP-002. Nintendo’s U.S. charging instructions specify the included WAP-002 (USA) adapter, and Nintendo’s support material identifies WAP-002 for the DSi and DSi XL. “Charger” or “cable” is common shorthand, but the item you need is the complete AC adapter: a wall plug with a cable and a small DC connector for the console. A cable-only accessory is not the same thing.
How to connect the DSi charger
- Use a WAP-002 adapter suited to your region and outlet.
- Insert the small connector straight into the rear port marked “4.6V IN,” with the logo facing up.
- Plug the adapter into the wall outlet. Before disconnecting the console end, unplug the adapter from the wall first.
Nintendo estimates charging takes approximately 2–3 hours, depending on how much charge remains in the battery. That estimate appears on Nintendo’s current support page, which does not state a publication year. Nintendo Support: How to Charge the Battery

Check the model and region before buying a replacement
WAP-002 is used across several Nintendo handhelds, but regional versions have different plug and electrical specifications. Nintendo documentation identifies variants including WAP-002(USA), WAP-002(JPN), and WAP-002(AUS/EUR). Confirm the adapter’s regional label and that its plug suits your local outlet; a WAP-002 listing alone does not establish that every regional version is appropriate worldwide. Nintendo Japan says the DSi, DSi LL, and 3DS share an AC adapter. Nintendo’s U.S. listing names the DSi, DSi XL, 2DS, 3DS, and 3DS XL. Those statements support compatibility for the models listed by Nintendo, not every Nintendo DS system.

DS Lite and original DS chargers are different
Do not buy a charger just because it is advertised for a Nintendo DS. Nintendo specifies model USG-002 for the DS Lite, while the DSi uses WAP-002. It does not appear to charge
- Check that the connector is inserted straight and seated in the rear “4.6V IN” port.
- Inspect the adapter, cable, connector, and console port for visible damage.
- Use an adapter intended for the DSi and for your region. Nintendo’s U.S. instructions specify WAP-002 (USA); do not assume an unspecified USB cable or power supply is suitable.
Nintendo’s Australian support guidance recommends using an adapter for the same DSi model and contacting Nintendo Customer Service about an official replacement if the console is outside warranty. Nintendo Australia: DSi charging troubleshooting

It charges, but the battery runs down quickly
A battery that no longer holds charge is a separate issue from a missing or faulty adapter. Nintendo identifies TWL-003 as the DSi battery and UTL-003 as the DSi XL battery. Nintendo says the battery can be fully recharged at least 500 times, after which performance begins to decline with long-term use; the current support page does not state a year for that figure.
