It depends on whether you play Java or Bedrock, which flat preset and biome you choose, whether structures are enabled, and whether your rules allow loot, trading, commands, or add-ons. In the Java Plains survival setup described by the Minecraft Wiki, ores do not naturally generate; that does not mean every ore or ore-made item is impossible to obtain by every route.
What “cannot get” means in a flat world
A flat surface does not by itself decide what exists or can be acquired. Minecraft world generation runs through distinct stages, including terrain, biome, structures, features, and mob spawning. Microsoft’s World Generation Overview explains that biomes help select features and mobs: ores, plants, trees, and springs are examples of features, while fish, polar bears, and goats illustrate biome-conditioned spawns.
For a survival challenge, it helps to separate three questions: does something generate naturally, can a structure or mob provide it, and can you acquire it through another game system? A resource absent from the terrain may still be available through village or chest loot, trading, mob drops, crafting from other materials, or—if your rules permit—commands and add-ons.
Java Superflat: what the cited survival setup lacks
The Minecraft Wiki’s Superflat survival tutorial describes a Plains-based survival context with no naturally generated ores. That is a statement about world generation in that context, not proof that every ore, mineral, or item made from one is impossible to acquire. The tutorial discusses villages, chest loot, and rare zombie drops as alternate ways to obtain some resources.

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The same Plains-biome limitation applies to natural mob spawns: a world with only Plains conditions does not provide the full range of biome-specific mobs. Microsoft’s examples show why the biome matters; for instance, fish, polar bears, and goats are associated with different biome conditions. The exact available mobs depend on the world’s configuration and game version.
Java structures depend on the preset and settings
Do not assume every Java Superflat world has the same structures. The default Superflat preset and Classic Flat are different configurations, and structure generation can depend on the chosen preset and settings. The default has been described as capable of generating some structures, including villages and strongholds, but that is not a guarantee that a particular structure will appear in every world.

Underground structures are especially unsafe to treat as a simple yes-or-no list: a Mojang bug-tracker report has described generation problems affecting some underground Overworld structures in Superflat. It is not a complete, current structure-availability table. Check the exact world preset and structure-generation options you are using before building a challenge around a specific structure.
Bedrock Flat is not the same setup
Bedrock calls its comparable option Flat rather than Java’s Superflat. The Minecraft Wiki’s Flat survival tutorial describes a baseline in which structures do not generate and the world consists of the block layers in the selected preset. However, that tutorial says it needs updating for newer Flat presets, so it should not be read as a definitive rule for every current Bedrock version or configuration. Check the presets and options available in your game.

Check these settings before starting a challenge
- Edition and version: note whether the world is Java or Bedrock and the version you are playing.
- Preset and biome: distinguish Java’s default Superflat from Classic or custom configurations, and check the selected biome.
- Structures and features: confirm whether structure generation is enabled and what the chosen preset supports.
- Allowed acquisition routes: decide whether village access, chest loot, trading, mob drops, crafting, commands, or add-ons count.
- Survival boundaries: state whether travel to other dimensions or changes to the world are allowed. These rules can change what “unobtainable” means for your challenge.
Can you get ores in Superflat?
In the Java Plains survival context described by the Minecraft Wiki tutorial, ores do not naturally generate. Some resources may still be reachable through other routes, such as village or chest loot and rare mob drops; availability depends on the item, world setup, and rules you allow. Do not equate “no ore veins generate” with “no related item can ever be acquired.”
Can you get a stronghold in a Superflat world?
Some descriptions of Java’s default Superflat say strongholds can generate, but that does not establish that one will appear in every preset or configuration. Structure behavior is version- and setting-sensitive, and underground structures have had reported generation issues. Verify your exact world settings rather than treating a stronghold as guaranteed—or universally impossible.

Can you beat Minecraft in Superflat?
That depends on the edition, preset, structures, and challenge rules. If your setup provides a route to the structures and resources needed for progression, completing the game may be possible; a more restrictive configuration can block or complicate those routes. Because the available evidence does not establish a current, exhaustive item-and-structure list for every setup, define your rules first and verify the required route in the specific world you plan to play.
