Those launch-era details offer a clear picture of the game’s premise and systems; the release is no longer upcoming.
What is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 about?
Humanity’s last city is Lumière. Each year, the Paintress marks an age on her monolith, and everyone of that age is erased. With the number 33 painted and one year remaining, Expedition 33 sets out to destroy the Paintress and break the cycle. Sandfall introduced this premise in its June 9, 2024 studio announcement and expanded on it in an Xbox Wire article published June 10, 2024.

Gustave and Maelle
Gustave is a diligent engineer and a playable lead. Maelle, his foster sister, is among his early companions. The launch-era introduction framed the expedition around these characters’ effort to stop the Paintress, rather than treating the yearly ritual as distant background lore.
How does the combat work?
The game combines turn-based party decisions with real-time reactions. Players choose actions strategically on their turns, then respond during enemy attacks with a dodge, parry, or jump. Attacks can also be aimed freely at enemy weak points, adding a precision element to offensive turns.

Characters have distinct mechanics, and their builds can be shaped through stats, skills, gear, and passive traits. The result, as described by Sandfall, is not purely menu-driven turn-based combat: defensive timing and aiming matter alongside party composition and build choices.
What else can players do beyond battles?
The release-date announcement describes an overworld with varied locations, hidden discoveries, optional battles, and side quests. Esquie helps the party explore that overworld. Monoco, a Gestral companion, can transform into defeated enemies and use their skills; his Bestial Wheel provides buffs.

Camp activities
At camp, players can upgrade weapons, adjust character builds, speak with teammates, and listen to the game’s original score on an in-game record player. These activities give exploration and party development a place between expeditions and encounters.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released on April 24, 2025, according to the official release-date announcement, which was published January 23, 2025 and updated on release day. The current official site links to Steam, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Epic storefronts. Sandfall also described the game as developed with Unreal Engine 5.

In its June 10, 2024 announcement, Xbox Wire said the game was planned for Xbox Series X|S in 2025 and day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. That was a launch plan, not confirmation of present-day subscription catalog status; check the current Game Pass catalog for availability. The launch materials do not establish current prices or platform-by-platform performance details.
