It is a level-and-feature-limited version of modern WoW: characters stop progressing at 20, most social and economic systems are disabled, and WoW Classic is excluded. A WoW subscription or game time is required for content beyond level 20.
What the WoW Free Trial is in 2026
The Free Trial is Blizzard’s current Starter Edition for modern World of Warcraft. It is available to new Battle.net accounts and to existing accounts that do not have an active subscription or game time. There is no stated countdown such as a 10-day trial period. Instead, access is limited by character level and by specific features.

A new character begins in Exile’s Reach. After that starting area, the game directs the character toward Dragonflight content. You can keep playing eligible content until the character reaches level 20, but you cannot continue normal progression above that level without adding a subscription or game time.
The policy applies to the modern game only. WoW Classic game versions are not included in the Free Trial.

Level, money and progression limits
Level 20 is the hard cap
Every Starter Edition character can be leveled to 20. Level-20 quests and dungeons remain playable, so reaching the cap does not cut off the final content at that level. Once the character is level 20, experience-based progression beyond the cap is unavailable until the account is upgraded.
The gold ceiling is 1,000 per character
Blizzard’s current Starter Edition guidance allows each trial character to hold up to 1,000 gold. That limit is per character, not a single allowance shared across the account. The trial’s other economy restrictions still apply, so having room under the gold limit does not give a Starter account access to trading, mail or the Auction House.
What happens when you reach the cap
You can continue using the character for any trial-eligible activities, including level-20 quests and dungeons, but the character cannot advance to higher levels. To unlock progression, add WoW game time or a subscription to the account. The upgrade changes account access rather than creating a separate trial-only character type.
Content available in the trial
Starting area and modern questing
Fresh characters begin in Exile’s Reach, the modern introductory zone. On leaving it, the normal direction is toward Dragonflight content. The exact route can vary with the current game client and account state, but the important boundary is the level cap: only content that can be played by a level-20 character remains available without payment.

Quests through level 20
Blizzard describes all playable content up to level 20 as free, including quests at that level. This does not mean that every zone, quest chain or expansion system in the game is open to a Starter account. Most recent-expansion content is restricted, including associated quests, zones and allied characters.
Dungeons and Random Dungeon Finder
Trial players can use Random Dungeon Finder and enter level-20 dungeons. Higher-level dungeons require an upgraded account. Dungeon access therefore follows the character-level boundary rather than providing a way around it.

The following restrictions are part of the current Starter Edition policy. Individual limits can change with patches or account updates, so check Blizzard’s latest support guidance if a particular feature is important to you.

How communication works on a trial account
Available channels
Starter characters can use /say and /party chat. They can also whisper World of Warcraft friends who were added by character name.

Level-based visibility for /say
A character that is 10 or more levels higher than the trial character will not see that trial character’s /say messages. This can make communication with high-level players appear to fail even when the message was entered correctly.
Whispers and identity systems
Whispering is limited to WoW friends added by character name. Real ID friends cannot be used by Starter accounts, and whispers to non-friends are blocked. WoW voice chat and text-chat emotes are also disabled.
Economy, groups and account services
No player-to-player economy
Trade, in-game mail and the Auction House are unavailable. You therefore cannot buy or sell through the player economy, mail items or gold to another character, or accept a trade from a paying player. The 1,000-gold personal ceiling remains even though those systems are closed.

Guilds and ordinary party formation
Guild-related functions and normal party formation are blocked. Random Dungeon Finder is the exception: it remains usable for the level-20 dungeon content that the trial supports.

Services and Warband storage
Value-added services are unavailable, and Starter accounts cannot deposit to or withdraw from the Warband Bank. These restrictions are separate from the level cap; reaching level 20 does not unlock them.
Pet battles
Pet battles are not available in the Free Trial. This is a system-level restriction, not merely a limitation on a particular pet or zone.
What a subscription or game-time upgrade adds
Higher levels and endgame activities
Blizzard says that adding a WoW subscription or game time unlocks all game content beyond level 20 and up to level 80. That includes higher-level dungeons and raids, so the upgrade is what turns the Starter character into a normally progressing modern-WoW character.
Social and economy features
Paid access restores guilds, unrestricted in-game chat and the Auction House. The other Starter restrictions on trading, mail, ordinary groups, Real ID, voice chat, services and Warband Bank access are likewise removed where the account and game version support those systems.

The newest expansion is a separate purchase
A subscription covers the modern game except the newest expansion. Blizzard’s current modes guidance records The War Within as included with the subscription from January 20, 2026, while Midnight requires a separate purchase. Do not treat buying game time alone as an automatic entitlement to the newest expansion.

Who the trial suits—and where it stops being practical
Good uses for a new player
- Learning modern movement, combat, quest tracking and dungeon basics without paying first.
- Testing several classes or races up to level 20.
- Playing the introductory experience in Exile’s Reach and sampling the route toward Dragonflight content.
- Trying level-20 quests and a Random Dungeon Finder queue with other players.
Signs you need paid access
- You want to continue leveling the same character past 20.
- You need guild membership, unrestricted chat or ordinary party formation.
- You want to trade, send mail, use the Auction House or access the Warband Bank.
- You want pet battles, higher-level dungeons or raids.
- You want content from the newest expansion, which may require buying that expansion even after subscribing.
Common misconceptions and practical checks
It is not a 10-day trial
The current Starter Edition is not described as a 10-day or other timed promotion. The meaningful limits are level 20 and the blocked features. An account can remain in the trial state until the player adds game time or a subscription.
Level 20 does not mean every level-20-era system is open
The cap determines progression, not universal feature access. Pet battles, guilds, trading, mail, the Auction House, Real ID, voice chat, text emotes and Warband Bank functions remain restricted even when the character has reached level 20.

Classic and modern WoW are different access questions
Starting the modern Free Trial does not grant access to WoW Classic games. Check the specific game version shown in the Battle.net launcher before assuming that a trial restriction or a paid entitlement applies to both.
Expansion ownership and subscription access are separate
A subscription can unlock the subscription-covered modern game while leaving the newest expansion unavailable. If the goal is to play Midnight, verify the separate purchase requirement rather than assuming that adding game time includes it.
Bottom line
Use the Free Trial as a no-cost introduction to modern World of Warcraft: create characters, play through level 20, run level-20 dungeons and quests, and earn up to 1,000 gold per character. Expect a deliberately restricted social and economy layer, no WoW Classic access, and a firm progression stop at level 20. Upgrade with a subscription or game time when you need higher levels, raids, guilds, unrestricted communication or the Auction House, and purchase the newest expansion separately when required.
