What Counts as a Main Story Boss?

“Main story boss” is an informal, game-specific label—not a universal list or a guarantee that every fight is mandatory. Learn how to check a boss guide’s scope and route.

“Main story boss” usually means a boss encounter tied to a game’s central narrative or progression—but it is not a standardized category, and it does not always mean the fight is mandatory. The phrase is used independently across games, so a reliable boss list or walkthrough needs to name the game and, where relevant, the route and version.

What does “main story boss” mean?

It is a guide label for a major enemy encounter associated with a game’s central story or forward progression. The label is informal rather than a universal rule: even the question of whether a particular character counts as a boss can be subjective. Baldur’s Gate 3’s wiki, for example, describes its boss category as subjective and uses Ketheric Thorm as a main-story example.

Does “main story” mean the boss is mandatory?

Not necessarily. A fight can be associated with a story route without being required in every playthrough. Games may offer branching routes, optional areas, or multiple ways to reach an ending, so “main” and “mandatory” are different questions. In Elden Ring, for instance, a guide connects main bosses to story progression while noting that players do not need every possible Great Rune to complete the game.

When checking a guide, look for whether it says an encounter is required for the specific ending or route you are pursuing, rather than relying on the heading alone.

Why there is no universal main-boss list

Different games use the phrase for different rosters and progression systems. PowerPyx’s AI Limit guide, dated March 31, 2025, separates numbered main-story encounters from hidden bosses. Game8’s Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance guide, updated August 4, 2025, describes story bosses as encounters during the main story whose defeat advances its storyline. Those are game-specific examples, not entries in a shared cross-game sequence.

As a result, a list that gives boss order, location, weaknesses, rewards, or strategies cannot be accurate without specifying the game. For a useful game-specific guide, identify:

How to use a main-boss guide without missing optional fights

  1. Check the guide’s scope. Confirm that it covers your game and version, and whether it lists story-path bosses, mandatory fights, optional bosses, or all three.
  2. Match its route to your playthrough. If the game has branching paths, verify that the listed encounters apply to your chosen route.
  3. Use the specific entry for the detail you need. Consult the game-specific section for an encounter’s location, unlock condition, strategy, or rewards; a general label alone cannot establish those details.
  4. Watch for spoiler warnings. A complete roster may reveal late-game encounters or story developments. Avoid the list if you want to discover those surprises yourself.
