Which discs work on Xbox Series X?

Xbox’s official guidance lists DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray movie playback and directs users to install the Blu-ray Player app. Xbox Wire’s Series X|S FAQ gives those format and setup details.
Can Xbox Series X play DVDs?
Yes, if your console is a disc-drive Series X. Insert the DVD and use the Blu-ray Player app, which you can download from the Store. The same app requirement applies to Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs.
Can it play 4K Blu-ray movies?
Yes. Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs are supported by Series X models with an optical drive. A compatible disc and a display setup capable of showing 4K are needed to watch a movie in 4K; the console’s disc support alone does not make a non-4K display show 4K.

Do Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs work?
Some do, but not every game from those generations. The title must be on Xbox’s backward-compatible list. When you insert a supported game disc, the console downloads the game to its storage; the disc must stay in the drive whenever you play. The catalog is the safest way to check a particular game before buying or installing it.
Does every Xbox Series X have a disc drive?
No. Microsoft’s current Xbox Series X product page lists disc-drive Carbon Black and 2TB Galaxy Black models, as well as a 1TB all-digital Series X. Check the exact model or SKU and confirm there is a slot-loading optical drive before purchasing physical movies or games. The Series S is a separate all-digital console; Xbox says external USB disc drives are not supported for it in the 2020 FAQ.

- The new DVD drive will need to be “flashed” with your console’s security key or will need to have your old drive's board swapped into the new replacement drive. That's Mean That You need to transfer the PCB board from the old one to the new one since it's paired to the Xbox.

What to check if a disc will not play
- Confirm the console has an optical drive. An all-digital Series X cannot read a physical disc.
- For a movie, install the Blu-ray Player app. Xbox specifies this app for DVD, Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray playback.
- For an Xbox 360 or original Xbox game, check the compatibility catalog. A disc from those generations does not guarantee the game is supported.
- For any specific movie disc, avoid assuming region-free playback. Xbox’s published format guidance does not establish universal region-free support or guarantee every individual disc will work.
