It’s unconfirmed. In official PlayStation guidance reviewed as of October 4, 2026, Sony has not stated whether PS5 games, accessories, or saved data will work on PS6. The published compatibility and transfer details cover PS4-to-PS5 and transfers into PS5; they are precedent, not a promise about the next console.
What Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 support does—and doesn’t—tell us
Sony’s current U.S. support page says PS5 plays the “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games, identifying more than 4,000 playable titles. That figure describes PS4 games on PS5, not a PS6 library or forecast. Sony also lists PS4-only exceptions, says some features may be unavailable and warns that some titles can show errors or behave unexpectedly. The list can change. PlayStation’s PS4 game compatibility guidance is a useful example of the detail a compatibility policy can contain, but it does not establish PS5-to-PS6 support.
Even within that earlier transition, access depends on the game and format. Digital PS4 games can be installed from the library of an account signed in on PS5. A PS4 game disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive; it cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition. Compatibility also does not guarantee feature parity or identical behavior. None of these PS4-to-PS5 rules confirms how PS6 will handle PS5 discs or digital purchases.
Will PS5 games run on PS6?
No official PS5-to-PS6 game compatibility policy is established in the reviewed PlayStation material. There is no confirmed list of supported games, no stated exception list, and no published rule here for PS5 disc or digital-game access on PS6. Do not treat the broad PS4-to-PS5 support record as evidence that every PS5 game—or any particular one—will run on PS6.

Will PS5 controllers and other accessories work on PS6?
PS6 accessory compatibility is also unconfirmed. Sony’s PS5 guidance shows why a general “controller works” answer is not enough: on PS5, DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads work with supported PS4 games, while PS5 games can only be played with DualSense. Licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks may work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. Sony also warns that not all third-party controllers work and directs players to check compatibility with the manufacturer and the specific game. The PS5 compatibility page does not say which devices PS6 will support.
Other peripherals have their own conditions. For example, Sony’s PS5 guidance describes requirements for original PS VR hardware, including the PS Camera and an adapter; headset support can depend on the connection type. These are PS5-specific details, not a basis for assuming a PS5 accessory will work on PS6. Before buying an adapter or peripheral for future use, wait for a PS6 compatibility specification covering the exact device, connection and game.

Will PS5 saves transfer to PS6?
No PS5-to-PS6 save-transfer method is confirmed in the reviewed official guidance. Sony’s current transfer guide covers copying data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5, including saved data for games playable on PS5. It requires the same account on both consoles and a shared network for console-to-console transfer; the guide also says not to interrupt the transfer. Its instructions do not promise that PS5 saves can be imported to PS6. Read PlayStation’s transfer instructions for the current PS5 process and its source-console limits.

- Cloud saves: PlayStation Plus members can download cloud saves to PS5. This is a current PS5 option, not a confirmed PS6 migration route.
- USB: PS4 save data can be copied by USB, but PS5 saves cannot be copied from the PS5 console to a USB drive. Do not assume the PS4 save method applies to PS5 data. Sony’s PS5 storage guidance explains the limits of storage options.
- Console transfer: The documented transfer is into PS5, subject to the guide’s source-console and setup conditions. It does not cover a destination PS6.
- Games and storage: Redownloading a digital game from the destination library, using a compatible USB extended-storage device, or moving an M.2 drive are among the PS5-specific options Sony describes. None is a published PS5-to-PS6 save or game transfer promise.
What to do while PS6 compatibility is unknown
- Keep access to the PlayStation account associated with your digital games and any cloud saves. Sony’s current PS5 download and transfer options rely on account access.
- Protect PS5 progress using a documented PS5 method. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage where applicable, and remember that PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB from the console.
- Check compatibility for the exact game or accessory with PlayStation and, for third-party hardware, its manufacturer. Current PS5 support is conditional on the title, device and connection.
- Wait for PS6 specifications before spending on a compatibility assumption. An adapter, new controller, storage drive or PS5 game cannot guarantee support on a console for which no compatibility policy is established.
Sony’s policies can change, so check official PlayStation announcements and support pages for PS6-specific guidance before making an upgrade or trade-in decision. A 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement about the future end of disc production for new PlayStation-console games concerns manufacturing; it does not establish whether PS6 will play PS5 discs or have a disc drive.
