What do axolotls eat in Minecraft?
The supported food for axolotls is a Bucket of Tropical Fish. The fish must be inside a bucket; ordinary loose tropical-fish items are not the documented feeding item for breeding. Mojang’s official axolotl article describes tropical fish as the mob’s favorite food and specifically notes that the fish must be transported in a bucket.
A Bucket of Tropical Fish serves two related purposes:

Cod, salmon and other commonly available fish are not established as axolotl food by the cited mechanics. Do not expect a loose tropical fish, a raw cod item or a raw salmon item to tame or breed an axolotl.
How to get a Bucket of Tropical Fish
You need two things: a water bucket and a tropical fish in the water. Tropical fish are aquatic mobs, so search warm ocean environments or another place where tropical fish already spawn, then use the bucket on the fish. The result is a Bucket of Tropical Fish that you can carry in your inventory.

- Find a tropical fish swimming in water.
- Use the bucket on the fish. Your empty bucket becomes a Bucket of Tropical Fish.
- Take at least two buckets if you intend to breed two adults. Each adult needs its own feeding action.
Keep the filled buckets in your hotbar while exploring. You can use one to lure axolotls and then use water buckets to capture them safely.
How to attract an axolotl
Select a Bucket of Tropical Fish and approach the axolotl. Axolotls swim toward a player holding tropical fish or a tropical-fish bucket, making the item useful for guiding them into a pen or toward a capture point.
Attraction is temporary behavior, not ownership. The axolotl is responding to the food item in your hand; the game does not record a conventional tame relationship merely because it follows you. If you put the bucket away or move out of range, it can stop following you.

What attraction can and cannot do
- It can: draw an axolotl toward you, help position it for breeding, and make it easier to bring one close to a water-filled enclosure.
- It cannot: create a permanent owner, give the axolotl a pet-style command system, or guarantee that it will remain beside you after the attraction ends.
Can you tame axolotls in Minecraft?
Not in the same technical sense as traditionally tamable pets. The cited Minecraft mechanics document feeding, breeding and bucket capture, but no conventional tame flag or permanent ownership system for axolotls.
Players often use “tame” informally to describe three practical actions:
- Attracting: hold a Bucket of Tropical Fish so an axolotl swims toward you.
- Capturing: use a water bucket on the axolotl to turn it into a Bucket of Axolotl.
- Breeding: feed two adults with Buckets of Tropical Fish to produce a baby.
These actions let you keep axolotls, relocate them and produce more of them, but none gives you the permanent pet ownership behavior associated with a conventional tameable mob.
How to capture and move an axolotl
Use an empty water bucket directly on the axolotl. The mob is picked up and your inventory receives a Bucket of Axolotl. This is the safest way to transport one over land, through a cave or across a long distance.
- Fill an empty bucket with water if necessary, then empty it or use another empty bucket for the capture.
- Hold the empty bucket and aim at the axolotl.
- Use the bucket on the axolotl to collect it.
- Carry the Bucket of Axolotl to the destination.
- Use the filled bucket on a suitable water location to release the axolotl.
Capturing avoids the problem of an axolotl drying out during a journey. Axolotls can exist on land for a while, but they need to return to water periodically. Java documentation says they begin taking damage after more than five minutes out of water unless they are in rain; the official article likewise warns that they must return to water. A bucket prevents that exposure during transport.

Where axolotls spawn
Axolotls spawn in lush caves, around underwater clay blocks. When searching, look for a lush-cave water pocket with clay beneath or around the water rather than checking every underground pool at random.
Finding a usable collection site
- Bring several empty buckets, plus at least two Buckets of Tropical Fish if breeding is your goal.
- Light nearby passages so hostile mobs do not interrupt the search.
- Locate a water area large enough to maneuver and to keep captured axolotls submerged after release.
- Carry building blocks so you can make a temporary enclosure or block off a dangerous current.
Once you see an axolotl, either lure it with tropical fish or capture it immediately. Capturing is preferable if the cave is cramped, dry or dangerous.
How to breed axolotls
Breeding requires two adult axolotls and one Bucket of Tropical Fish for each adult. The adults must be close enough to enter breeding mode.
- Obtain two adult axolotls. They can be wild axolotls from a lush cave or adults you have moved with Buckets of Axolotl.
- Build or choose a water-filled enclosure. Keep both adults in the water so they do not take land damage.
- Hold a Bucket of Tropical Fish and use it on the first adult.
- Use a second Bucket of Tropical Fish on the other adult.
- Allow the adults to complete the breeding process and wait for the baby axolotl to appear.
- Keep the baby in water and protect it from hazards while it grows.
The adults have a breeding cooldown. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial cited for this mechanic reports five minutes in Java Edition and one minute in Bedrock Edition. These figures are edition-specific and should not be treated as one universal cooldown.
Why breeding may fail
- You used loose tropical fish instead of Buckets of Tropical Fish.
- Only one adult received the food.
- The axolotls are still within their edition’s breeding cooldown.
- The two adults are too far apart to enter breeding mode together.
- One of the mobs is a baby; babies cannot serve as the two adult breeders.
- The enclosure leaves them out of water long enough to take damage or die.
Baby axolotl growth and the blue variant
A baby axolotl takes about 20 minutes to mature according to the cited Minecraft Wiki tutorial. Feeding can make a baby grow sooner, so you can choose between waiting and spending additional tropical-fish buckets.

Ordinary breeding has a very low chance of producing the blue variant. The same tutorial reports a 1-in-1,200 chance when breeding ordinary non-blue parents. That is a reported game-mechanic figure from the Minecraft Wiki, not an independently measured guarantee for every world or future patch.
Planning a breeding area
- Use a fully contained pool so babies cannot wander into dry blocks.
- Provide enough room for adults to swim without becoming trapped in corners.
- Keep a supply of tropical-fish buckets nearby if you are attempting many breeding cycles.
- Separate newly produced babies if you want to track growth or keep adults from crowding them.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences
The core food item and capture method are the same in both editions, but the cited tutorial identifies important differences.

The tutorial also gives Java-specific handling advice for feeding, while the exact interaction details can vary with edition and patch. If a hand or off-hand interaction behaves differently in your version, use the item directly on the axolotl and confirm that both adults show breeding behavior before waiting for the result.
Keeping axolotls alive outside water
Axolotls are aquatic mobs. They can be on land temporarily, but they need to return to water. Java documentation states that an axolotl begins taking damage after more than five minutes out of water unless it is raining. Treat that as a survival limit, not as a convenient way to keep one permanently on dry land.
Safe enclosure checklist
- Fill the enclosure with water before releasing the axolotl.
- Use walls or fences to prevent it from wandering away from the pool.
- Cover gaps where the mob could become stranded on a dry ledge.
- For outdoor displays, remember that rain can affect the Java land-damage behavior, but a permanent water pool is the dependable solution.
- When moving an axolotl any distance, use a bucket rather than relying on its ability to walk or swim behind you.
What axolotls do in combat
Axolotls are more than decorative mobs. They attack many aquatic creatures, including drowned. Their documented targets exclude turtles, dolphins, frogs and other axolotls, so placing mixed aquatic mobs together does not mean every creature will be attacked.

They can support a player during an underwater fight. The official Minecraft article says that when you kill a creature the axolotl was hostile toward, you receive Regeneration and lose Mining Fatigue. This makes an axolotl useful when clearing an underwater area or dealing with hostile aquatic mobs, provided you keep it in water and close enough to participate.

Play-dead behavior
Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes axolotls as aquatic combat helpers and documents their play-dead behavior. An axolotl may appear to stop fighting and float as though it is dead; this is a behavior, not proof that the mob has vanished. Give it a safe water environment and avoid assuming that a motionless axolotl can be treated as a dropped item.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I am holding fish, but the axolotl will not breed.”
Check that the item is a Bucket of Tropical Fish, not a loose tropical-fish item. Then feed both adults separately. If both have been fed, wait for the edition-specific cooldown before trying again.
“The axolotl followed me, so why did it stop?”
Following is attraction caused by the tropical fish or tropical-fish bucket in your hand. It is not permanent taming. Capture the axolotl in a bucket if you need reliable transport or long-term relocation.
“My axolotl died after I moved it.”
It may have remained out of water too long. Use a Bucket of Axolotl for travel and release it into a prepared pool. In Java, more than five minutes out of water can cause damage unless the axolotl is in rain.

“I cannot find axolotls in ordinary caves.”
Search lush caves and inspect underwater clay. The documented spawning location is lush-cave water around clay blocks, not every underground water pocket.
“The baby is not blue.”
Blue is exceptionally rare from ordinary non-blue parents: the cited figure is 1 in 1,200. A normal-colored baby is therefore the expected result, not evidence that breeding failed.

Bottom line for “taming” an axolotl
Use Buckets of Tropical Fish to attract and breed axolotls, and use a water bucket to capture and transport them. Minecraft does not provide a conventional permanent tame state for axolotls. A protected water enclosure, the correct bucketed food and attention to the Java-versus-Bedrock cooldown are the practical keys to keeping a healthy axolotl colony.
