A ranked rating is a separate competitive statistic, not another name for your map score.
The labels overlap on result screens, so it is easy to read the wrong thing into them. This guide separates each metric, explains where it is used, and shows why a Daily Challenge streak, a Country Streak, a tournament result and a ranked rating cannot be interpreted in exactly the same way.

What a GeoGuessr score measures
A GeoGuessr score answers one question: How accurate was this location pin? The basic action is described in GeoGuessr’s Terms of Service as scoring points by pinning the exact location of your character on a map of the world. In practical terms, a guess nearer to the true location earns a better result than a guess farther away.
The score belongs first to an individual location attempt. Depending on the mode, the game then displays a result for the whole game, challenge or match. A game total therefore combines the results of its locations; it does not turn the word “score” into a measure of your lifetime skill or your ranked standing.

What a high or low score tells you
- A relatively high location score means your pin was close under that mode’s scoring rules.
- A lower score means the pin was farther from the correct location, or that the mode applied rules that made the result less favorable.
- A game total reflects all of the locations played, so one excellent round can coexist with a weak overall game.
- The same numerical score should be interpreted with its mode and map in mind. Official pages do not publish one universal distance-to-points formula that applies to every GeoGuessr mode and map.
That last point matters when people try to reverse-engineer a score. You can safely use the direction of the relationship—closer generally means more points—but you should not present an unofficial equation as the current universal rule for every map and mode.
What a round means
A round is one location attempt inside a game. You receive a location, investigate the available clues, place a pin and submit it. The game then evaluates that pin before moving to another location or ending the game.
When someone asks “How many rounds are in a GeoGuessr game?”, the accurate answer depends on the mode. In the official Live Challenge format, there are five locations per game. Its support description says the aim is to achieve as high a score as possible by being close to each location; the leaderboard is visible within the round and your progress is shown after the round. In other modes, the number and presentation of locations can differ, so do not assume that every game uses the Live Challenge structure.

| Term | Meaning | When it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Location attempt | The place you are currently trying to identify and pin. | It ends when you submit the guess or the mode ends the attempt. |
| Round | One location attempt considered as a step in the game. | The next location begins, or the game finishes. |
| Game score | The combined result shown for the locations in that game or challenge. | It updates as locations are completed and is finalized when the game ends. |
In a five-location Live Challenge, for example, “round 3” means the third location attempt, not a third separate match. Your score for that location and your running game total are related but different values.
What a map streak is
A map streak is a consecutive-success measure. It answers “How many qualifying successes have I made without an interruption?” The definition of a qualifying success comes from the mode: a country identification in Country Streak is not the same task as completing a Daily Challenge day.

Streaks are counts, not accuracy scores. A streak can increase even when the underlying location score is not the central objective, and a high single-round score does not automatically create a streak. Conversely, a streak can end because of a wrong result, a failed attempt or a missed deadline even when earlier rounds were strong.
Country Streak
Country Streak is built around consecutive correct country identifications. The official Country Streak page labels the mode “Country streaks” and displays a “Your best streak” counter. Its default settings list a two-minute time limit with moving allowed.
Those defaults describe the standard setup shown by the mode; they are not a rule that every streak variant must use. If a host or map uses different settings, interpret the streak under those selected conditions. The number records the run of correct country answers, while the time limit and movement setting describe how each answer was made.
Daily Challenge streak
The Daily Challenge is a day-based streak rather than an endless sequence of locations in one sitting. Its official page describes five locations refreshed daily and asks whether you can keep your streak. The results table includes “Score,” “Current streak” and “Number of steps,” so these values answer different questions: performance on the challenge, the length of your uninterrupted daily run and the challenge’s progress count.
The reset follows Central European Time, with the applicable summer or winter change (CET/CEST). You must complete the attempt before the official reset. Completing it after the reset can break the streak or consume a streak freeze, according to GeoGuessr’s support guidance. A player in another time zone should therefore convert the reset to local time instead of relying on midnight where they live.

Why a streak can reset even after good play
- Wrong qualifying answer: the mode’s required identification was incorrect.
- Failed or incomplete attempt: the challenge was not completed under its rules.
- Daily deadline missed: the attempt finished after the CET/CEST reset.
- Streak-freeze use: a late completion may be covered by a freeze rather than preserving the streak normally.
Check the mode before diagnosing a reset. Country Streak measures country answers under its settings; Daily Challenge measures completed daily attempts. They are not interchangeable counters.

| Metric | What it measures | Typical scope | What ends or changes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Score | Accuracy of a location pin. | One round, then a game or challenge total. | A new guess and the scoring rules of the mode. |
| Round | One individual location attempt. | One step inside a game. | The next location or the end of the game. |
| Streak | Consecutive qualifying successes. | Across rounds, countries or days, depending on mode. | A wrong result, failed attempt or missed reset deadline. |
| Ranked rating | Competitive performance and progression on a ladder. | Ranked games and divisions. | Results, opponent skill, inactivity and the current ranked rules. |
The table’s key distinction is scope. A score is attached to a pin; a round is the attempt containing that pin; a streak links several qualifying successes; and a ranked rating describes your place in a competitive system.
Is ranked rating the same as score?
No. Ranked Play uses a ladder with divisions, and its overall rating changes according to competitive results. The official guide says the amount of overall rating gained or lost depends on the opponent’s overall rating. That makes rating movement a comparison within a competitive system, not a direct conversion of distance from the correct location.
Higher divisions also show separate ratings for Moving, No Move and NMPZ. These are mode-specific statistics. The guide states that they are for statistical purposes only and do not control matchmaking or promotion or demotion. Your overall ranked rating is therefore the ladder figure to distinguish from those mode ratings and from the point score on an individual map.
Moving, No Move and NMPZ
- Moving: a ranked format in which movement is part of the mode’s play conditions.
- No Move: a format where the player does not move from the initial view.
- NMPZ: the abbreviation used for the no-movement, no-pan, no-zoom format.
The important interpretation is not that one rating is “better” than another. They describe performance in different ranked formats, and the official guide says these mode-specific values do not determine matchmaking or division changes.

How tournaments use rounds and health
Tournaments use another vocabulary again. Tournament pages describe advancement by the player who has the most health after the given rounds. Tournament rating is not affected. A tournament round can therefore contribute to a health total and an advancement decision without behaving like a single-player map score.
Do not compare a tournament health result directly with a Country Streak count or assume that a tournament rating change will appear in your ranked rating. The same word—“round”—still means a step in the contest, but the win condition is different.
How to read a GeoGuessr result screen
Use the label and the mode together rather than reading a number in isolation.
- Identify the mode. Determine whether you played a Live Challenge, Country Streak, Daily Challenge, Ranked Play or a tournament.
- Locate the score field. Treat “Score” as the accuracy result for the submitted pin or the game total built from those results.
- Locate the round or location count. In a five-location Live Challenge, the current round tells you which of the five attempts you are playing.
- Check streak wording. “Current streak” refers to consecutive qualifying successes, while “Your best streak” records the highest run shown by Country Streak.
- Separate ranked values. An overall rating or Moving, No Move or NMPZ rating belongs to Ranked Play’s competitive statistics, not to the location-score calculation.
- Check timing for Daily Challenge results. If a daily run changed unexpectedly, compare completion time with the CET/CEST reset and check whether a streak freeze was used.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every game has five rounds
Five locations is the documented Live Challenge format. It is not evidence that every GeoGuessr mode uses five locations. State the mode whenever you describe a game’s length.
Treating a streak as a score
A streak counts uninterrupted qualifying successes. It does not tell you how close every pin was, and a score does not tell you how many consecutive successes you have made.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Using one points formula everywhere
Official material explains the closeness principle but does not publish one universal distance-to-points formula for all maps and modes. Use mode-specific rules and avoid converting an unofficial estimate into a general promise.
Blaming a Daily reset on a bad guess
A reset can follow a missed CET/CEST deadline, a failed attempt or a streak-freeze event. Review completion time and the challenge status before concluding that the location score caused the loss.
Reading mode ratings as matchmaking ratings
Moving, No Move and NMPZ ratings in higher Ranked Play divisions are statistical indicators. The official guide says they do not affect matchmaking or promotion or demotion, so the overall rating and current ranked rules remain the relevant ladder context.

A practical way to discuss your results
When sharing a result, include four pieces of context: the mode, the round or location number, the score or streak value and any timing or settings that affect interpretation. “I scored well in round 4 of a five-location Live Challenge” communicates something different from “I extended my Country Streak under the two-minute moving default” or “my Daily Challenge current streak survived the CET/CEST reset.”
This wording prevents the most common confusion: a score describes closeness, a round identifies the attempt, a streak describes continuity and a ranked rating describes competitive progression.
The Bottom Line
Remember the four separate meanings: score is pin accuracy, round is one location attempt, streak is consecutive qualifying success, and ranked rating is ladder performance. Always attach the mode—especially for five-location Live Challenges, Country Streak settings, Daily Challenge reset timing and Ranked Play’s Moving, No Move and NMPZ statistics.
