On an NFL practice report, limited participation means a player took less than 100% of his normal repetitions; full participation means he took 100%. These labels measure practice workload, not whether the player will appear in the next game. For that, check the separate game-status designation.
What do limited and full participation mean?
The NFL Personnel (Injury) Report Policy defines participation by comparing a player’s work with his normal repetitions across both individual drills and the team portion of practice.
- Limited participation: Less than 100% of normal repetitions. A player may do individual drills but miss some or all of the team portion and still be listed as limited.
- Full participation: 100% of normal repetitions. It describes the amount of practice work completed; it does not establish that the injury has healed, that the player is pain-free, or that he will have his usual role in a game.
- Did not participate: Zero percent of normal repetitions, according to the same policy.
The NFL’s exact definitions are “less than 100 percent of a player’s normal repetitions” for limited participation and “100 percent of a player’s normal repetitions” for full participation. NFL Personnel (Injury) Report Policy
Does a full practice mean the player will play?
No. Practice Status and Game Status are separate fields on NFL injury reports. Practice status records workload; game status gives the team’s stated expectation about whether the player will participate in the upcoming game. NFL.com describes the game designations as:
#1 Best Overall
- Questionable: Uncertain to play.
- Doubtful: Unlikely to participate.
- Out: Will not play.
These designations are not interchangeable with limited or full practice participation. NFL injury reporting policy NFL injury reports
How should you read a change from limited to full?
A change from limited earlier in the week to full later in the week means the player’s reported practice work increased relative to his normal repetitions. It can provide context, but the participation definitions do not assign a probability of playing. Check the player’s separate game-status designation and any later update for the team’s stated outlook.

When are NFL injury reports filed?
For the 2026 regular season, the league calendar sets practice-report deadlines based on each team’s game day. The standard deadline is 4:00 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. Game-status reports have separate filing deadlines, and teams must update a report if a player’s condition changes after the initial game-status filing. See the NFL 2026 regular-season calendar for the schedule. Reporting days vary with the team’s game schedule.

Limited and full are workload categories, not diagnoses or recovery timelines. The official definitions do not say what injury a player has, whether he is pain-free, or how likely he is to play. No probability of playing follows from either label alone; use the game-status report and subsequent updates for availability information.
