What Do the Colors Mean in NYT Connections? Difficulty Levels Explained

NYT Connections colors rank intended difficulty from yellow (easiest) to purple (trickiest), but category styles are tendencies and personal difficulty varies.

In NYT Connections, the intended difficulty order is yellow (easiest), green, blue, then purple (trickiest). The colors rank the four categories by their designed difficulty; they do not tell you which group to solve first, and they cannot guarantee which one will feel hardest to you.

What each Connections color means

Each Connections puzzle presents 16 words. The goal is to sort them into four groups of four. The New York Times Help Center says each group is assigned one of four colors—yellow, green, blue, or purple—and explicitly ranks yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest. Read from easiest to trickiest, the intended progression is yellow, green, blue, purple.

That order is the direct answer to “What do the colors mean?” They are difficulty labels for the categories, not four interchangeable modes or a code for the order in which you should solve. The middle colors fill out the ranking: green follows yellow, and blue follows green. The labels suggest editorial intent, but they do not provide a complete recipe for identifying a category from its color before you have solved it.

Yellow: the most straightforward category

Connections editor Wyna Liu has described yellow as “the most straightforward.” Yellow and green categories can involve accessible groupings, such as things someone might bring to the beach or groups of synonyms. Those examples illustrate the kinds of connections that can feel familiar without specialized knowledge or an elaborate wordplay step.

“Straightforward” does not mean that all four words will necessarily jump out at once. The puzzle presents all 16 words together, and some may appear to fit more than one plausible group. A yellow category can still take thought if its words are competing with other possible associations on the board. The color tells you its intended place in the difficulty ranking; it is not a guarantee that every player will spot it immediately.

Green: next in the intended order

Green sits after yellow in the official difficulty order. Liu discusses yellow and green as colors that may use straightforward category types, but she does not assign green a fixed construction or give it a defining formula. That distinction matters: published descriptions support green as the second level in the ranking, not a rule such as “green always means synonyms” or “green always has a particular kind of clue.”

It can be tempting to treat every color as a hint about the exact trick in a group. The available description does not support that. Green may be approachable, but you still have to work out the relationship among the four words. Use the color ranking as context rather than as a substitute for examining the words.

Blue: often more specialized trivia

Liu describes blue as potentially drawing on more specialized trivia—for example, a group of movies or particular bands, rather than a connection based only on simple definitions. A blue category may be straightforward if those subjects are familiar to you, but it can be difficult if the trivia falls outside your knowledge.

That is why blue deserves a caveat: Liu says it is sometimes the hardest category for a solver. Its usual position as the third color in the intended order does not mean it will always feel easier than purple. If a blue group depends on a reference you do not recognize, it may be harder for you than a wordplay category whose pattern you spot quickly.

Purple: often wordplay

Purple is the trickiest category in the official ordering. Liu characterizes it as the wordplay category: the four words may share an ending, form homophones, or connect in another way that is not based on their literal meanings. In her description, the group might involve words that “end with ___” or sound alike, rather than four words that simply belong to the same everyday subject.

Wordplay is a tendency, not a rigid definition. Liu’s published description does not say that every purple group must use a shared ending or homophones, nor does it provide a complete formal definition of purple. So purple is useful as a signal that a less literal connection may be involved, but it is not enough by itself to reveal the category. You still need to find the relationship that accounts for all four words.

How the four colors compare

The colors are best understood on two separate axes. The first is intended difficulty: yellow is easiest, followed by green and blue, with purple as the trickiest. The second is typical category construction: yellow and green may use accessible groupings, blue may lean on more specialized trivia, and purple often involves wordplay. These descriptions are patterns Liu has discussed, not formal definitions that mechanically determine every category.

Keeping the axes separate prevents a common misreading. A color ranking is not a promise that every player will experience the categories in that exact order of difficulty. Nor is a typical construction guaranteed: a blue category is not necessarily trivia, and a purple category is not necessarily a homophone puzzle. The order describes the puzzle’s intended difficulty; the construction examples describe tendencies that may help you think about what kind of connection to test.

Color Intended difficulty Common pattern described by the editor
Yellow Easiest Most straightforward; may use accessible category types
Green Second May use straightforward category types; no fixed formula is given
Blue Third May use specialized trivia, such as movies or particular bands
Purple Trickiest Often wordplay, such as shared endings or homophones

In short, the most reliable thing to infer from a color is its place in the intended difficulty order. The examples are useful context, but they cannot tell you exactly what a particular group means or how hard it will be for you.

Why the hardest color can vary by player

The color labels describe intended or editorial difficulty, not an objective guarantee about how a particular person will experience a puzzle. Familiarity changes the experience: specialized movie or band trivia can feel easy to someone who knows the subject and opaque to someone who does not. Wordplay can work the same way; one solver may notice a shared ending or sound quickly, while another initially reads only the words’ literal meanings.

Liu says difficulty can be subjective and that testers sometimes give the same board a wide range of ratings. She also notes that blue can sometimes be the hardest category. That is a practical reminder that the four colors should not be treated as a universal measurement of how long a group will take or how many solvers will find it difficult. No published statistic establishes a numeric difficulty score for each color.

Liu describes a testing process in which participants are asked to rate puzzle difficulty on a one-to-five scale, but no results from that process or a statistic mapping colors to scores are provided. The official color order is still clear; what is not supported is a claim that yellow equals a particular score, that each color represents a measured increment, or that all players will agree on the ranking for an individual board.

Why words can seem to fit more than one group

The board is designed to make grouping challenging. The Help Center says words may fit multiple categories, even though each puzzle has one solution. That combination—overlapping possible associations, but one intended answer—is central to how the colors should be read. A tempting group may not be the set the puzzle is using, and a word’s apparent fit with one idea does not settle the category by itself.

For example, several words might suggest a familiar theme while also sharing a less obvious feature. You may need to consider the other words and the relationships they leave available before deciding which set is intended. This does not mean the color order has changed. It means that overlap and the puzzle’s single-solution design can make a category feel more challenging than its label suggests.

The Help Center’s statement that each puzzle has one solution is useful when you meet competing interpretations: the intended groups must work together as four sets of four. A candidate connection should account for all four words in its group and make sense alongside the remaining groups, rather than merely describing a few words that happen to share an association. The color can offer a broad difficulty cue, but it cannot resolve an overlap on its own.

Do the colors tell you what to solve first?

No. The colors indicate intended difficulty ranking, not a required solving order. You can scan all 16 words and start with whichever group you recognize, regardless of whether you expect it to be yellow, green, blue, or purple. There is no rule that says you must solve yellow first or save purple for last.

Solving one group can change how the remaining words look because it removes those four words from the board and narrows the possible associations among the rest. If an apparent connection remains ambiguous, considering the complete set of 16 and the groups that must still be formed can help you reassess it. That is consistent with the Help Center’s description of intentional overlap and a single solution: the colors are not a sequence of steps, while the groups have to fit together as one complete answer.

It is also fine to use the color tendencies lightly as you think. If a literal grouping is not convincing, a wordplay connection may be worth considering; if a group seems to depend on a specific subject, trivia could be involved. But those are possibilities drawn from Liu’s examples, not instructions that determine the answer. Let the words and the full-board fit establish the group.

What to remember while solving

  • Official order: yellow, green, blue, purple, from easiest to trickiest.
  • Yellow: Liu calls it the most straightforward; accessible category styles can include beach items or synonyms.
  • Green: it follows yellow, but Liu does not give it a fixed category formula.
  • Blue: it may rely on more specialized trivia, such as movies or particular bands, and can sometimes feel hardest.
  • Purple: it is the trickiest in the official order and often uses wordplay, such as shared endings or homophones.
  • Tendencies are not definitions: a category’s color does not guarantee its construction.
  • Personal difficulty varies: knowledge, interpretation, and the specific puzzle can make any category feel hardest.
  • Colors do not dictate order: solve whichever group you can identify, and reconsider overlaps in light of the remaining words.

Sources and what they establish

The core color ranking and the basic puzzle structure come from the New York Times Help Center page “Connections,” accessed October 13, 2026. It says each puzzle asks players to form four groups of four from 16 words, assigns each group a color, ranks yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest, and notes both that words may fit multiple categories and that each puzzle has one solution.

The category-style examples and the caveat about subjective difficulty come from Elaine Godfrey’s November 28, 2024, interview with Connections editor Wyna Liu in The Atlantic, “The Most Controversial Game on the Internet.” Liu calls yellow the most straightforward, discusses accessible styles for yellow and green, describes blue as potentially specialized trivia, and characterizes purple as wordplay. Her comments are the basis for treating those constructions as tendencies rather than fixed rules.

Why can words seem to fit more than one Connections group?

The New York Times Help Center says that words may fit multiple categories, even though each puzzle has one solution. An apparent overlap can make a group harder to identify until you consider how all four groups fit together.

Is there a numeric difficulty score for each color?

No published numeric statistic maps colors to scores. Liu describes testers rating puzzles on a one-to-five scale, but no resulting color-by-color statistic is provided.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: NYT Connections’ intended difficulty order is yellow, green, blue, then purple. Yellow is described as the most straightforward; blue may involve specialized trivia; purple often uses wordplay. These are tendencies, not fixed definitions, and individual difficulty can vary—so use the colors as context, not as a solving order or guarantee.
