The correct choice depends on two things: the drive profile (such as Phillips, Torx or pentalobe) and the size that fills the recess without rocking. Using a near-match or the wrong size can damage the screw head, the bit, or both.
What a precision bit type actually means
A bit type describes the geometry at the working end of a screwdriver. The recess in a screw head is manufactured to accept that geometry. “Precision” refers mainly to the small sizes used in electronics, controllers, handhelds and other compact hardware; it does not mean that every precision bit fits every small screw.

Profile and size are separate decisions. A PH000 and a PH1 are both Phillips bits, but they are intended for different recess dimensions. iFixit’s selection guidance is to choose a bit that fills the screw head. An undersized bit can wobble and damage the corners; an oversized bit will not seat fully.

What each major bit type does
Phillips (PH)
Phillips is the familiar four-arm cross. The important choice is the numbered size, not the apparent diameter of the screw head. A PH000, PH00, PH0 or PH1 marking identifies a bit family and size; the correct one is the bit that reaches the recess walls and fills the cross cleanly. Phillips geometry is intended to cam out under excessive torque, so a driver that repeatedly climbs out of the recess is a warning to stop and reassess the size, alignment and screw condition.
Slotted or flathead (SL)
A slotted screw has one straight slot. The blade must match both the slot’s width and its thickness. A blade that is too narrow concentrates force on the slot edges; one that is too thick will not enter completely. Small precision sets commonly label flat bits with designations such as SL1 through SL4.
Torx (T)
Torx uses a six-lobed star-shaped recess. Count the lobes rather than guessing from a photograph: a six-lobed star is different from a five-lobed pentalobe. Torx sizes use T markings, and the bit should contact all six lobes before you turn the handle.
Security Torx or pin-in Torx
A security Torx screw has the same general six-lobed outline but a pin in the centre. A standard Torx bit has solid material in that centre and therefore cannot seat over the pin. Use a security bit with a centre hole. Kit makers list security Torx separately from ordinary Torx because the two forms are not interchangeable on these screws.

Hex or Allen
Hex screws have six straight internal sides. The bit must match the across-flats dimension, commonly specified in millimetres in precision sets. A hex bit that is close but not exact can round the corners, especially when the recess is shallow.
Pentalobe
Pentalobe has five rounded lobes. It can look like a small star at a glance, but Torx has six lobes and will not correctly engage it. P2, P5 and P6 are examples of pentalobe markings found in precision assortments. Select the size by seating, not by the screw’s outside diameter.
Tri-point, tri-wing and Y
These names describe three-lobed or three-wing forms. Different manufacturers use “Tri-Point” and “Tri-wing” terminology, so the label alone is not enough to establish interchangeability. Compare the actual recess and choose the matching size. A three-point bit is not a substitute for a Phillips, Torx or pentalobe bit.

Pozidriv (PZ)
Pozidriv is a cross-drive with additional smaller ribs between the principal arms. Those ribs are the visual clue. A PZ bit is designed for that extra geometry; treating the screw as ordinary Phillips can produce a loose fit and damaged recess.

JIS (J)
JIS is the Japanese Industrial Standard cross-drive. It resembles Phillips closely enough to cause mistakes, but the geometry is different and Phillips and JIS bits are not always interchangeable. If a cross recess feels loose with a correctly sized Phillips bit, check whether it is JIS before applying more force.
Tri-angle, U-type, W-type and square
These are specialist profiles found in some precision kits. A tri-angle recess has three straight sides; U-type, W-type and square drives have their own distinct outlines. Their presence varies substantially between sets, so identify the recess first and buy or select the exact profile rather than assuming a general-purpose cross or star bit will work.
How to select and seat the right bit
- Inspect the recess. Look directly at the screw under good light. Identify the number and shape of lobes, arms or sides. Do not force a bit into a recess that only looks similar.
- Separate similar profiles. For a cross, consider Phillips, Pozidriv and JIS. For a star, count five versus six lobes and check for a centre pin.
- Start with the size that appears to fill the recess. The working end should reach the sides without excessive clearance.
- Test the fit by hand pressure only. Press the bit straight down and gently rock the handle. A properly sized bit sits firmly without wobbling or bottoming out before its driving faces engage.
- Keep the driver aligned with the screw. Precision recesses are shallow; tilting the handle reduces contact and encourages slipping.
- Apply controlled torque. If the bit climbs out, stop. Re-check the profile, size, seating and the condition of the screw head instead of increasing force.
Why Phillips, JIS and Pozidriv should not be treated as synonyms
All three can appear as a cross when viewed from above, but their internal geometry differs. Phillips has four primary arms and is designed to cam out at excessive torque. Pozidriv adds secondary ribs, while JIS uses a different standard geometry. A bit may turn a screw briefly while still fitting poorly; that apparent success is not proof of compatibility. For delicate game hardware and electronics, use the profile that matches the recess and reserve force for a last resort only after the fit has been verified.

The tip profile and size determine whether the bit engages the screw. The shank format determines whether the bit can be held by your handle. Do not assume every precision bit uses the same connector or length.

For example, Xiaomi’s Mi Precision Screwdriver Kit specification for model MJJXLSD002QW identifies its bits as C4 × 28 mm. That describes that kit’s bit format; it is not evidence that every precision handle accepts C4 × 28 mm bits. Before buying loose replacements, check the handle’s socket, the bit’s shank dimensions and the usable length. A correctly shaped tip is still unusable if it cannot lock into the handle.

Two manufacturers’ contents lists illustrate why “precision bit set” is not a complete specification. The ARCTIC Precision Screwdriver Toolkit lists Phillips, slotted, Torx, security Torx, hex, pentalobe, tri-point, Pozidriv and JIS families. Xiaomi’s MJJXLSD002QW specification includes Phillips, slotted, Torx, security Torx, pentalobe and hex, plus W-type, U-type, tri-angle and tri-wing profiles, and specifies C4 × 28 mm bits.
Neither assortment establishes a universal standard for all kits. When comparing a precision screwdriver bit kit, check these four items:
- Drive families: confirm that the set includes the profile you actually need.
- Exact sizes: a family name without the individual sizes may leave a required screw uncovered.
- Specialty and security forms: look for security Torx, pentalobe, tri-point or other uncommon profiles when your hardware uses them.
- Handle interface: verify shank shape, diameter and length, not just the tip markings.
Troubleshooting a bit that slips
The bit rocks in the recess
The bit is probably undersized, the wrong profile or both. Try the next appropriate size in the same family, then reassess whether the recess is JIS, Pozidriv or Phillips if it is a cross.

The bit will not enter fully
An oversized bit, a security pin or debris in the recess can prevent full seating. Check the centre of a star-shaped recess for a pin and compare the bit’s opening. Never compensate by pressing harder.
The screw head is already damaged
Stop repeated attempts with the same slipping bit. Confirm the profile and size, keep the handle vertical and use only controlled pressure. An improvised near-match is not a reliable repair strategy; once the recess is rounded, removal becomes more difficult.
Choosing a set for game hardware and other electronics
Start with the screws you expect to encounter rather than buying every possible profile. A practical baseline is a range of small Phillips and slotted sizes, then Torx and security Torx if your hardware uses star drives. Add hex, pentalobe, tri-point, JIS or Pozidriv when the actual screws call for them. Specialty profiles are useful only when they match a real recess.
For a replacement or expansion set, compare the printed size list with your existing handle. A set that has the right tip families but an incompatible shank format will not solve the job. Conversely, a large assortment is not automatically better if it omits the one size that seats correctly.
