Turning in Demiguise Moons upgrades Alohomora, the spell used to open locked doors: nine free-roam Moons unlock Level II, and 22 total unlock Level III. You do not need all 30 free-roam statues for the highest lock rank; collecting the full set is for completion and the Demiguise Dread achievement.
What the Demiguise Moons reward
Bring collected Moons to Gladwin Moon to improve Alohomora. The upgrades let you open higher-level locks elsewhere in Hogwarts Legacy.

The second upgrade requires 13 additional Moons after the first nine. The thresholds and lock effects are described in Gamer Headlines’ Demiguise guide and corroborated by PowerPyx’s statue guide.
Why guides say there are 30 or 33 statues
The 30 refers to the free-roam statues tracked across the map: 10 in Hogwarts, nine in Hogsmeade, and 11 in the Highlands. The full-game count is 33 when the three statues encountered during the introductory quest, The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament, are included. Those three quest statues are separate from the 30 free-roam collectibles.

How many should you collect?
For Alohomora III
Return 22 free-roam Moons and you can stop hunting for the highest lock rank. The complete checklist does not require Level III locks to reach any of its 30 listed collectibles, so Level II is enough to access them all.
For the full collectible set
Continue to all 30 free-roam statues if you want the complete hunt and progress toward the Demiguise Dread trophy or achievement. That goal requires more Moons than the 22 needed for Alohomora III.

When and how to collect the Moons
The hunt becomes available through the main story quest The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament, which introduces the statues and grants Alohomora I. You may spot free-roam statues earlier, but you can collect their Moons only at night. Use the map’s Wait command to advance in-game time to night.

If you want to unlock Alohomora II without first opening Level II doors, Gamer Headlines identifies a route using eight Highlands statues accessible with Alohomora I or lower, plus the statue at Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade. This is one possible route, not a required collection order.
