In most cases, you do not need a high-end gaming PC or console because the provider runs the game remotely and streams the video to your device.
The exact requirements differ by service, game, device, subscription, and region. Start with hardware you already own, then verify compatibility before buying accessories or changing your internet plan.

What cloud gaming requires
Cloud gaming runs the game on the service provider’s computers. Your device receives a live video stream and sends your controller or touch-input commands back to the provider. That changes the priority compared with local gaming: a powerful graphics card is usually less important than a supported device, reliable bandwidth, and low enough latency for responsive controls.
- A supported device: This may be a Windows or Mac computer, phone, tablet, browser, console, smart TV, streaming device, Chromebook, or handheld.
- A stable internet connection: Published bandwidth targets vary by service and stream quality. Consistency, Wi-Fi conditions, and latency matter in addition to the headline download speed.
- Game access: The title must be available in your region and on your device, and you may need a subscription, account, or separate ownership of the game.
- Compatible controls: Most games expect a Bluetooth or USB controller, although some titles support touch controls or other device-specific input.
These are practical requirements, not a universal checklist for every platform. Confirm the current service rules before setup because catalogs, supported devices, software versions, regions, and plan features change.

Do you need a gaming PC or console?
No. A gaming-grade local computer is generally unnecessary for cloud play. You can often use a computer that is suitable for video streaming, a recent phone or tablet, a supported television, or a compatible streaming device. Your local hardware still needs to run the service’s app or browser and decode the incoming stream, so very old devices may be excluded even though they would not be rendering the game themselves.
Devices commonly supported by major services
| Service | Examples of supported devices | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Windows PCs; Apple and Android phones and tablets; Xbox consoles; selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA smart TVs; Amazon Fire TV; selected Meta Quest headsets | Device models, operating-system versions, browsers, regions, and game availability vary. |
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW | Windows and Mac computers; ChromeOS; Linux; browsers; Android; iPhone and iPad; SHIELD TV; selected smart TVs; Fire TV models; named handhelds | Controller support and available features differ by device, browser, membership tier, and game. |
| Amazon Luna | Fire TV; Fire tablets; Windows and Mac computers; Chromebook; iPhone and iPad through a web app; Android phones and tablets; selected Samsung and LG TVs; certain regional devices | Local availability and the catalog vary by territory. |
Use the service’s current device list to check the exact model and software version. “Android phone” or “smart TV” is not a guarantee that every model works.
How fast does your internet need to be?
There is no single universal bandwidth threshold. Each provider publishes guidance tied to its own stream settings, and a connection that meets the download number can still feel poor if it has unstable Wi-Fi or high latency.

| Service and source | Published connection guidance | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming — Xbox FAQ, accessed October 2026 | 10 Mbps minimum download; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality | A minimum and a device-dependent quality target, not a guarantee of responsiveness. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming — Xbox Wire guide, December 19, 2025 | At least 20 Mbps recommended for a stable connection | A recommendation for stability. Xbox also suggests Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or 5G on capable devices. |
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW — current system requirements, accessed 2026 | 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 frames per second; 25 Mbps for full HD at 60 frames per second | Higher resolutions and frame rates require higher published thresholds. |
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW — current system requirements, accessed 2026 | Less than 80 ms network latency to an NVIDIA data center | A latency target measured to the provider’s data center, not a general promise for every route. |
| Amazon Luna — current help page, accessed 2026 | 10 Mbps sustained for 1080p | The requirement is for maintaining a 1080p stream. |
Check your actual connection at the location where you will play. A speed test taken beside the router may not represent performance in another room. If possible, begin with Ethernet. Otherwise use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network close to the access point and reduce competing traffic while you test.
Why stability and latency matter
Cloud gaming continuously exchanges video and control data. Short drops, congestion, or fluctuating latency can produce stutter, image-quality reductions, or delayed controls even when a speed test shows enough bandwidth. The published figures above come from the service owners; they are not independent measurements of what every household needs.
Do you need a controller?
Usually. Xbox says most cloud games require a compatible controller, while select titles provide touch controls. NVIDIA lists supported gamepads across its device categories, and its iPhone and iPad guidance requires a gamepad for gameplay. TV play on NVIDIA also requires a supported gamepad.

- Touch controls: Available only in selected games and generally limited to devices and apps that expose them.
- Phone-mounted setup: NVIDIA recommends a phone controller clip for attaching a compatible gamepad to a handset. Check the physical fit before purchasing.
Do not buy a controller until you have checked the specific game and device. Support can differ between a phone, browser, TV app, and handheld, even within the same service.

How game access and subscriptions work
Having the app installed does not automatically give you every game. Check three separate questions: Is the title offered in your country? Is it included in your plan, or must you own or subscribe to it separately? Does the title support your chosen device and input method?
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Most cloud games require an eligible Game Pass plan in a supported region. Xbox also offers selected free-to-play cloud games with only a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Titles, features, and availability can change by plan, region, device, platform, and time.

Access and features depend on membership tier and game. Certain high-resolution, HDR, or high-frame-rate options require a paid membership tier. Confirm the game’s own requirements as well as the device and browser rules.
Amazon Luna
Amazon’s overview describes Luna Standard as included with Prime, but offerings and prices vary by territory. Check the current local catalog and terms rather than assuming that a Prime membership provides every title.
Step-by-step setup
- Choose the service and region. Open the provider’s current availability page and confirm that the service operates where you live.
- Check your device. Verify the exact phone, tablet, computer, TV, browser, console, or handheld model and its required software version.
- Find your game. Search the service catalog and read whether the title is included, requires a plan, requires a separate purchase or ownership, or has device restrictions.
- Confirm your connection. Compare your measured download speed with the service’s published guidance. Test at the intended play location, not only beside the router.
- Improve the connection without buying anything. Try Ethernet first. If using Wi-Fi, select 5 GHz, move closer to the router, and pause large downloads or video streams on the same network.
- Install the official app or open a supported browser. Follow the service’s sign-in instructions and complete any account or subscription requirement.
- Pair the input device. Connect a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller and test it in the service interface. On a phone or tablet, verify that the game supports touch controls before relying on the screen alone.
- Launch a low-stakes test. Play for several minutes and watch for delayed controls, repeated quality drops, or disconnects. If problems occur, troubleshoot the network before buying accessories.
Choosing between services
Compare services using the factors that determine whether you can actually play the title you want:
Best Value
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Device and region | Does the service support your exact model, operating system, browser, and country? |
| Game access | Is the title included, tied to a subscription, dependent on separate ownership, or unavailable on this service? |
| Stream target | What resolution and frame rate do you want, and does your connection meet that service’s corresponding guidance? |
| Input | Does the game accept your controller, keyboard and mouse where applicable, or touch controls on your device? |
| Plan tier | Are HDR, higher resolution, higher frame rate, or other features limited to a paid membership? |
These checks are more useful than choosing a service solely by its advertised device count or bandwidth number.
Common problems and practical fixes
The stream looks blurry or keeps changing quality
- Test with Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Stop other high-bandwidth activity temporarily.
- Move the device closer to the router.
- Confirm that your connection meets the service’s target for the selected resolution and frame rate.
Controls feel delayed
- Check latency to the provider’s data center where the service supplies that measurement.
- Use a wired connection if available.
- Remove unnecessary wireless hops and test again at a different time of day.
- Verify that the controller is supported by both the device and the game.
The game will not start
- Confirm that the title is available in your region and on your plan.
- Check whether separate ownership or a publisher account is required.
- Update the app, browser, or device software to the supported version.
- Check whether the service has temporarily changed catalog availability.
The controller connects but does not work in the game
Reconnect it after launching the service, try a USB connection if supported, and check the individual game’s input requirements. On iPhone and iPad with NVIDIA, a gamepad is required; touch-only play is not a substitute.
What is optional rather than required?
Buy accessories only when they address a problem you have identified:
- Controller: Needed when your game and device do not support an input method you already own.
- Ethernet cable: Worth trying when Wi-Fi instability is causing drops or latency.
- Dual-band 5 GHz router: Relevant if your current wireless equipment cannot provide a stable 5 GHz connection.
- Phone clip: A comfort and portability accessory for a compatible phone and controller.
- Dedicated cloud handheld: Convenient, but not a minimum requirement. Logitech G Cloud is listed as a supported handheld by both NVIDIA and Xbox; support and availability should be checked before purchase.
No accessory can guarantee the elimination of lag if the route to the service is congested or the service is far from your location.
