To play online on PS5, you need an internet connection, a PlayStation account, and the game you want to play. Most PS4 and PS5 games also require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, but some do not—check the game’s PlayStation Store listing before subscribing.
What you need to play online on PS5
- An internet connection: Connect the console over Wi-Fi or wired LAN. A LAN cable is needed only if you choose a wired connection. PlayStation’s internet-connection instructions cover both options.
- A PlayStation account: Sign in to access PlayStation online features and services. PlayStation says signing in requires an account and an internet connection. See PlayStation’s sign-in guide.
- The game: You need the game you intend to play, whether it is installed from a disc or obtained digitally.
- PlayStation Plus, if the game requires it: PlayStation Support says, “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” Some games are exceptions; check the specific game’s PlayStation Store listing. PlayStation Plus support explains the rule.
Choose Wi-Fi or wired LAN
PS5 supports both Wi-Fi and wired LAN. Choose based on where your router is, whether you can run a cable to the console, and which setup suits your home. The official setup guidance supports both methods but does not establish that one is always better.
For wired networking, connect an Ethernet LAN cable between the PS5 and your router, then follow PlayStation’s connection setup steps. If you use Wi-Fi, no LAN cable is necessary.
Check whether your game needs PlayStation Plus
Do not assume every online game requires a subscription. Most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, while some do not. Look up the individual game in PlayStation Store and check its online multiplayer requirements before paying for a membership. PlayStation’s support page does not provide a complete list of exceptions, so the game’s listing is the practical place to verify its rule.

If you already have an active PlayStation Plus membership, sign in on PS5 with the account that has it. The membership is tied to that account. Selected benefits can also be shared with other players on one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. Set up your PS5 for online play
- Connect the PS5 to the internet using Wi-Fi or wired LAN. Follow PlayStation’s internet connection instructions.
- Sign in to an existing PlayStation account, or create one to access PlayStation services. For first-time console setup, see Getting started with your new PS5 console.
- Start the game you want to play online.
- If you are unsure whether multiplayer requires Plus, check the game’s PlayStation Store listing.
- If it requires Plus, sign in with an account that has an active membership.
Do you need a particular internet speed?
PlayStation’s reviewed setup and subscription guidance does not specify one minimum internet speed for ordinary online multiplayer. Do not treat speed figures stated for separate features, such as cloud streaming or Share Play, as a universal requirement for playing games online. Your connection still needs to be working, but the cited guidance does not establish a single speed threshold for this use.
