What Does a 71% Steam Player Rating Mean When Deciding Whether to Buy?

By VGSources Team 9 min read

A 71% Steam rating means that roughly 71% of the reviews included in the displayed score recommend the game. It is a measure of reviewer sentiment, not a quality grade out of 100 and not a prediction that you personally have a 71% chance of enjoying the game. Because 71% is only slightly above the 70% boundary Valve has used when explaining review categories, the percentage and the written reasons behind it matter more than the label alone.

What the 71% percentage actually measures

Steam calculates its review score from the share of counted reviews that are positive. In simplified form:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Positive reviews ÷ counted reviews × 100 = displayed percentage.

At 71%, positive recommendations outnumber negative recommendations. That tells you how often reviewers recommended the game after their experience, but it does not tell you that the game is “71 out of 100,” that 71% of all players are satisfied, or that your own outcome is statistically likely to match the score. A reviewer can recommend a game despite technical problems, or reject it for a problem you would never notice.

Valve describes the score as a broad signal of how happy the community was with its purchase and as a tool that can help potential customers predict their own satisfaction. That is useful for screening a game, but it remains an aggregate opinion. The score cannot account for your genre preferences, hardware, tolerance for repetition, preferred language, or whether you need a healthy multiplayer population.

Why 71% deserves a closer look than a simple “good” or “bad” verdict

A 71% result is more positive than negative, yet it is close to a category boundary. In a 2016 explanation of Steam’s review system, Valve gave a 69% versus 70% example in which a one-point change could move a game between displayed categories such as “Mixed” and “Positive.” That example demonstrates that labels can change at a threshold; it is not a complete, current table of every category cutoff.

Consequently, do not treat a label such as “Mostly Positive” as a separate quality guarantee. A game at 71% may sit only a few reviews away from a different displayed category, especially when its review total is small. The number itself is more informative when you also know the denominator, the time period, and the reasons people gave.

Start with the review count

The review total appears beside the percentage on the store page. It tells you how much evidence the 71% summarizes. The same percentage can describe very different situations:

Illustrative result What it tells you What it does not establish
71 positive out of 100 reviews A compact sample happens to be 71% positive. That the ratio will remain stable as more owners review the game.
710 positive out of 1,000 reviews The same ratio is supported by a much larger body of feedback. That the game fits every player or every hardware configuration.
71% with an unusually small total The displayed category may be sensitive to only a few new reviews. A durable community consensus.

These figures are arithmetic illustrations, not claims about a particular game. Use the actual count on the store page and read the percentage and count together. A low count should make you more cautious about treating 71% as settled consensus; a high count gives the ratio more weight but does not remove the need to inspect what reviewers are discussing.

Compare the lifetime score with Recent Reviews

Steam’s lifetime score combines the game’s counted review history. The Recent Reviews score is a separate view of positive reviews from the previous 30 days when Steam has enough reviews in that window and the game has been available for at least 45 days. Steam introduced this recent view so buyers can see whether sentiment has changed after a launch period, major patch, business-model change, or live-service update.

Lifetime score Recent Reviews Likely interpretation to investigate
71% Higher than 71% Recent players may be responding well to fixes, new content, or a better current state. Confirm the change in written reviews.
71% Lower than 71% Recent problems may include a damaging update, server trouble, monetization change, or a launch of unfinished content.
71% Close to 71% Current sentiment appears broadly consistent with the lifetime record, subject to the size of the recent sample.
71% Not shown The game may not meet Steam’s review-volume or 45-day availability conditions for a recent score.

Do not automatically give Recent Reviews priority. A recent score can be based on a much smaller window and can swing quickly. Conversely, a lifetime score can conceal a serious current problem in a continuously updated game. The useful question is whether the two scores disagree and whether the written explanations identify a cause that will affect your purchase.

Read why people voted, not just how they voted

Open a sample of recent positive and negative reviews and look for repeated, specific observations. Steam notes that reviews can reflect the game itself, its value proposition, business practices, and the wider community experience. Those are different kinds of criticism, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Technical and performance complaints

Look for recurring reports of crashes, stuttering, long load times, controller problems, incompatibilities, or graphics settings that fail to work as expected. If you use older hardware, a handheld, ultrawide display, or a particular operating-system configuration, give platform-specific reports extra weight.

Gameplay and content complaints

Repeated comments about repetitive missions, weak progression, balance, difficulty spikes, missing features, or a short campaign matter only in relation to what you want. A player seeking a brief, focused experience may view a short campaign as a benefit; someone expecting a long role-playing game may see it as poor value.

Business model and value complaints

Check whether negative reviews object to the launch price, downloadable content, in-game purchases, subscriptions, always-online requirements, or a change in terms. A 71% score can hide a sharp disagreement about value: some reviewers may like the game while disliking how it is sold.

Multiplayer and community complaints

If the game depends on online play, identify comments about matchmaking times, regional server availability, moderation, cheating, or a shrinking player population. A single-player buyer can discount those complaints; a multiplayer buyer may treat them as decisive.

Prefer patterns over isolated anecdotes. One report of a crash is a warning to investigate; dozens of recent reports with similar hardware details are stronger evidence that the issue could affect you.

Check whether the score is language-specific

Since Steam’s August 18, 2025 update, some qualifying games can receive a language-specific review score. Steam may calculate one when a game has more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews and at least 200 reviews written in a particular language. Where this feature is generated, Steam displays the score for the viewer’s primary language by default.

This can produce different percentages for the same game. Valve says language groups may report more positive or more negative experiences because translation quality, regional support, or network conditions differ. If the score you see seems inconsistent with the reviews you are reading, open the language breakdown and check whether you are comparing the same review population.

Language-specific scoring is especially relevant when a game relies heavily on text, voice acting, customer support, or regional servers. An English-language score may not describe the experience of a player using another supported language, and a global lifetime score may smooth over a problem concentrated in one region.

Understand which reviews are included in the score

Steam says reviews from accounts that purchased the game on Steam and played it count toward the review score. Other reviews can still be visible on a store page, so the collection of reviews you can read is not necessarily identical to the set used to calculate 71%.

When you sample reviews, pay attention to the purchase indicator and the platform or configuration described. A visible review from a different acquisition route may still contain useful information, but it should not be assumed to have the same status as a counted Steam purchase review. This distinction also explains why the written review list and the displayed percentage can appear slightly out of sync.

Use a 71% score as a buying workflow

  1. Record the full context. Note the 71% percentage, the total review count, the displayed category, and whether Steam is showing a language-specific score.
  2. Open Recent Reviews. Confirm whether the recent view is available, note its percentage and apparent review volume, and identify whether sentiment is improving or worsening.
  3. Read representative positives and negatives. Choose several recent reviews on each side rather than sorting only by the most entertaining or extreme comments.
  4. Classify recurring reasons. Separate technical faults, gameplay preferences, value or monetization objections, and multiplayer or community conditions.
  5. Match each reason to your use case. Consider your genre preferences, solo or multiplayer plans, hardware, language, available play time, and tolerance for the specific drawbacks reviewers repeat.
  6. Check the timing. Look for references to patches, early-access changes, server shutdowns, or a recent business-model change. A dated complaint may no longer apply; a current cluster may be more important than an older lifetime average.
  7. Set your own deal-breakers. Decide which issues would make you abandon the purchase. If the recurring criticism includes one of those issues, a positive majority does not compensate for it.
  8. Compare alternatives on the same axes. For another game, compare review volume, lifetime and recent sentiment, language-specific results where available, and the substance of praise and criticism—not just which percentage is higher.

How to interpret common 71% scenarios

71% overall, much lower Recent Reviews

This pattern suggests that current buyers may be less satisfied than the historical audience. Investigate the date and subject of recent complaints before buying, particularly if the game is live-service or recently patched. A lower recent score is a prompt to understand the change, not proof that the game is permanently worse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

71% overall, much higher Recent Reviews

Recent players may be benefiting from fixes or added content. Confirm that the improvement addresses the criticisms that matter to you. If the old complaints concern permanent design choices rather than bugs, a higher recent score may not change your personal fit.

71% with thousands of reviews and consistent reasons

A large, stable body of feedback gives the percentage more evidential weight. The repeated reasons still determine whether the score is favorable for you. For example, widespread praise for combat does not offset widespread reports of poor online matchmaking if multiplayer is your main reason for buying.

71% with a small review total

Treat the result as an early signal. A few additional positive or negative reviews can move both the percentage and the displayed category. Read every available detailed review, check the game’s age and release status, and avoid treating the number as a mature consensus.

Different scores by language

Use the score for the language and region in which you will actually play, then inspect the language-specific written reviews. Differences may reveal translation, voice-over, support, or connectivity conditions that a global aggregate conceals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the 71% score does not tell you

  • It does not estimate your probability of enjoyment.
  • It does not grade graphics, writing, performance, accessibility, or value separately.
  • It does not reveal how many owners never wrote a review.
  • It does not guarantee that a problem described in older reviews has been fixed.
  • It does not show whether a game’s audience matches your preferred genre or play style.
  • It does not replace checking system requirements, language support, multiplayer conditions, or current update notes.

Do not confuse store visibility with purchase quality

Steam’s documentation says review score is not a factor in algorithmic visibility while a game’s reviews are “Mixed” or above, described as 40% or higher; below 40%, a game is less likely to be featured. That rule concerns how Steam may surface products in its store. It is not a recommendation threshold and does not make a 71% game intrinsically better than a 69% game.

The same caution applies to category labels. Valve’s historical 69% and 70% example shows that a one-point movement can alter the label near a boundary, while Steam’s published material does not provide a complete current official table of every threshold. Treat the exact percentage, count, recency, language context, and written reasons as the evidence you can actually evaluate.

When 71% is enough to buy

A 71% game can be a sensible purchase when the negative themes are minor for you, the recent score is stable or improving, the review count is substantial, and the technical and multiplayer conditions match your setup. It can also be a good choice when reviewers consistently praise the exact feature you value most, even if they criticize unrelated elements.

Wait, investigate further, or choose another game when the negative reviews identify a deal-breaker: frequent crashes on your hardware, unusable language support, an empty multiplayer population, a monetization model you reject, or a recent update that removed a feature you need. In those cases, the positive majority describes other buyers’ priorities rather than resolving yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: treat 71% as a screening signal

Seventy-one percent means that approximately seven in ten counted Steam reviews are positive recommendations. It is a mildly favorable but threshold-sensitive signal, not a quality score or personal guarantee. Check the review count, compare the lifetime and 30-day views, inspect language-specific sentiment when available, and translate repeated praise and criticism into your own deal-breakers. Buy when the current evidence fits how you will play; do not buy solely because the label sounds positive.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
