In Skyrim’s graphics settings, AA usually means antialiasing: a way to make jagged edges look smoother. If you’re deciding which option to use, Bethesda’s PC troubleshooting guidance says switching from TSAA to FXAA or Off may help with performance problems—but there is no one best setting for every PC.

What does AA do in Skyrim?

Antialiasing reduces the stair-step appearance that can show along diagonal edges, such as rooftops, weapons, or character outlines. It changes how the image is rendered; it does not change the game’s underlying objects or textures. The exact visual and performance effect depends on the game edition, settings, and hardware.

Skyrim community glossaries use “AA” for antialiasing and “MSAA” for multisample antialiasing. A community discussion also addresses antialiasing as an image-quality setting, but it does not establish a current performance comparison across systems. Nexus Mods Forums glossary; GameFAQs discussion.

What is the difference between TSAA and FXAA?

TSAA and FXAA are different antialiasing options. In Skyrim Special Edition on PC, Bethesda’s support guidance identifies TSAA, FXAA, and Off as options to consider when troubleshooting performance. The cited guidance does not provide a controlled comparison of image quality or frame rates, so it cannot establish which option looks or performs best on your setup.

Choose by checking the result in your own game: compare edge smoothness and responsiveness in the same scene, at the same resolution and other settings. If performance is the problem, try a less demanding option and see whether it helps rather than assuming that a particular AA mode will make a measurable difference.

Should you turn AA off to improve Skyrim performance?

If you are playing Skyrim Special Edition on PC and experiencing performance or framerate problems, Bethesda says changing antialiasing from TSAA to FXAA or Off may help. It is one troubleshooting step, not a universal recommendation. Bethesda also advises resetting the launcher’s auto-detected video options, checking that the PC meets system requirements, closing background programs, and checking graphics drivers. 1. Open the Skyrim Special Edition launcher and reset the auto-detected video options, as Bethesda recommends.
  2. If performance is still poor, try changing antialiasing from TSAA to FXAA or Off.
  3. Check performance in a consistent scene, then decide whether the smoother edges are worth any performance cost on your PC.
  4. If the issue remains, follow Bethesda’s other guidance on system requirements, background programs, and graphics drivers.

This advice is specific to Skyrim Special Edition on PC and its launcher. Do not assume the same settings or troubleshooting path applies to console versions, Skyrim VR, or every modded configuration.

Could AA mean something other than antialiasing?

Yes. In Skyrim modding terminology, “AA” can also mean Animated Armoury, a mod. If the discussion is about graphics, jagged edges, or display settings, antialiasing is the likely meaning. If it is about mods or load order, the surrounding context may point to Animated Armoury instead. Modding Skyrim’s glossary lists that alternate use.
