It lets another player join the world; it does not create an extra farmhouse for solo play. The host lives in the farmhouse, while each cabin houses one farmhand.
What a cabin does
A cabin is co-op housing. If you want friends to play on your farm, each visiting farmhand needs a cabin. The common setup is one cabin for two players, two cabins for three players, and three cabins for four players—the host is included in the player count but lives in the farmhouse. See the official multiplayer troubleshooting guide for the classic four-player arrangement.
A cabin does not give a solo player a second farmhouse or, by itself, turn an existing save into a multiplayer game. It provides a home for a farmhand in a farm set up for multiplayer.
How to get a cabin
When creating a co-op farm
You can choose cabins as part of co-op farm creation. The number to build depends on how many farmhands you expect, not including the host.

#1 Best Overall
- For 1 to 4 players
- Ages 13+
- About 45 minutes per player
- A cooperative board game
- Based on the hit video game
On an existing farm
- Make sure the save is set up for multiplayer and has room for another player.
- Visit Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop and request a cabin. On an eligible existing farm, it costs 100g, requires no building materials, and is constructed instantly, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s cabin guide.
If Robin does not offer the cabin, the save may not have been started for multiplayer or may already be at its player limit. The official troubleshooting guide covers these multiplayer setup issues.
Cabin upgrades: who can buy them and what they add
Each farmhand must purchase upgrades for their own cabin; the host and other farmhands cannot do it on that player’s behalf. Each upgrade takes three days and costs the same as the equivalent farmhouse upgrade. The cabin’s stages mirror the farmhouse’s progression, as described in the multiplayer guide and farmhouse reference.

Cabin styles and platform limits
Cabin styles are cosmetic for gameplay: the official guide says Stone, Plank, and Log cabins have no gameplay effect. The guide’s statement means choosing a style does not grant a different function or advantage.

The maximum number of cabins varies by platform and game version. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s current cabin listing reports a maximum of seven on computer and Nintendo Switch 2, and three on other consoles. Because platform support and limits can change with updates, check the current version for the platform you play on; the official guide’s familiar three-cabin-plus-host arrangement describes a four-player setup, not every platform’s maximum.

The host can demolish a cabin, but doing so removes its occupant from the game. That farmhand’s inventory, except for tools, is placed in a chest at the cabin’s former location. Before demolishing one, make sure the player knows where to retrieve their belongings.
