In gaming, GG stands for “good game.” Players type it in multiplayer chat, usually as a match ends, to acknowledge the other side and show sportsmanship. Depending on timing and tone, the same two letters can also signal a concession or be used sarcastically, so the surrounding context matters as much as the abbreviation itself.
What GG usually means in a match
GG is a courtesy message. Its most common use is at the close of a match, where it works like a handshake: the player acknowledges that the game was played and that the opponent or team deserves a sign of respect. The British Esports Federation’s competitive gaming glossary describes it as “a message normally sent when the game is ending to show sportsmanship,” and notes that it can also be used to concede (British Esports Federation, A-Z of esports and competitive gaming jargon).
How tone and timing change the meaning
The abbreviation is short, so readers infer intent from when it appears and how the rest of the chat reads. Plarium’s glossary entry describes two broad registers: a sincere GG after a close, hard-fought match, and a sarcastic or taunting GG after a one-sided result (Plarium, What is GG (Good Game) – Meaning and More). The same word can therefore read as warm or as mocking.
- Sincere, post-match: sent after a close game, often with a compliment or a reply in kind.
- Concession: sent when a match is effectively decided, sometimes before the final result is shown, to signal that the player is giving up.
- Premature: sent before the game has actually ended, which some players read as impatience or a sign of quitting.
- Sarcastic or taunting: sent after a lopsided result, where the tone is intended to mock rather than praise.
When in doubt, look at what happened in the last few moments. A GG that follows a comeback or a tight finish is almost always sincere. A GG typed while the other side is still playing, or one that arrives right after a humiliating blowout, deserves more caution.

Gaming chat uses several short forms that sit next to GG. The New Zealand Esports Federation’s glossary lists the two most common companions (New Zealand Esports Federation, A Glossary of Esports Terms):

GGWP is the clearest signal of genuine praise, because it names the opponent’s skill directly. GLHF is never a post-match message; a player who sends it at the end of a game is usually just greeting the room again.

Where the term comes from
The meaning of GG is well documented in current esports and gaming glossaries. The sources consulted for this article do not establish a reliable origin date or the first person to use the phrase in gaming chat, so any claim about its invention would go beyond the evidence. What can be said is that GG is now standard enough that competitive game communities and glossaries define it without explanation.

If you want your message to read as sincere, send GG after the result is clear and pair it with GGWP when the match was genuinely close. If you are conceding, you can make the intent explicit with words, because a bare GG can be misread as sarcasm after a rough loss. If you receive a GG you are unsure about, the rest of the chat and the match’s final moments usually settle the question more reliably than the abbreviation alone.

In a game where the chat is toxic or a team is splitting apart, a bare GG can be an invitation to argue. Treat it as a closing signal and move on.
