It is not a universal mod pack or a guarantee that every game supports mods: each developer chooses whether to use it, what content to allow, and how players access it.
What mod.io provides
mod.io is infrastructure for studios and publishers building user-generated content (UGC) into games. Depending on a game’s setup, players may browse and manage content through an in-game interface, a web portal, or both. The service supplies developer tools and content-management capabilities; it does not decide that every game or platform will offer the same mods. mod.io describes its cross-platform mod support, while its Getting Started documentation explains the developer setup.
How a game connects to mod.io
Integration is controlled by the game’s development team. The official onboarding flow starts with a game account and profile, followed by configuration of the game’s UGC settings. Developers can connect through an Unreal Engine plugin, a Unity plugin, or a C++ SDK for custom builds; the REST API provides the underlying UGC functions. The studio also configures details such as tags, moderation, supported platforms, and creator links. See Getting Started and the mod.io API v1 reference.
What players may experience
For players, mod.io can be the system behind a game’s mod browser or UGC portal. The game determines which content is available, how it is presented, and which platforms can use it. “Official mod support” therefore means that a game’s developer or publisher has built an official path for UGC; it does not mean every community mod is approved, every title uses mod.io, or that one game’s setup applies to another.

#1 Best Overall
When checking a particular game, look at its official support information for these specifics:
- Whether mod browsing is available in-game, on a web portal, or both.
- Which kinds of UGC the game accepts and what moderation or approval rules apply.
- Which game platforms support mods and whether content is shared across them.
- Whether creators can sell content or the game offers only free UGC.
Cross-platform support is conditional
mod.io documents pathways for PC, consoles, mobile, and VR, but those capabilities do not guarantee support in a given title. Platform availability and features depend on the game’s integration and the platform’s requirements. The PC documentation lists Steam, Epic Games, and GOG Galaxy, with differences in feature availability between storefronts (PC cross-platform support). Its console documentation lists Xbox One and Series X, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2; it describes console support as a premium feature requiring the relevant platform approval process (console cross-platform support). These are platform capabilities documented by mod.io, not a promise that a specific game supports every listed system or feature.

Paid mods and creator payments are optional
A game using mod.io does not necessarily have a paid marketplace. The publisher or studio decides whether to enable one, sets its moderation and approval process, chooses whether content is priced in virtual currency or USD, and configures the creator/studio revenue share. The marketplace details are therefore game-specific, not a universal mod.io price or payout policy. mod.io’s marketplace support article, published December 3, 2025, describes those publisher-controlled choices.
mod.io also documents virtual currency and Creator Credits, as well as a transaction partner. Example rates depend on the payment path and the studio’s configuration, so a single fee or creator share should not be assumed across games. Check the game’s current marketplace terms and the relevant monetization documentation; Creator Credits are covered separately in mod.io’s Creator Credits support article.
How to tell whether a specific game uses it
- Check the game’s official website, support pages, or in-game menus for a mod browser or UGC portal.
- Confirm that the page or menu identifies mod.io; do not infer it from another game’s mod setup.
- Verify the supported game platform and storefront, since features can differ between versions.
- Read the game’s content rules and marketplace terms if you want to upload, download, or buy UGC.
The service’s homepage displayed activity figures such as downloads, monthly active users, creators, and live games without specifying a reference year. Those undated figures should not be treated as dated current statistics (mod.io homepage).
