Spoiler warning: This article discusses the ending of God of War Ragnarök and reveals from God of War (2018).
The final mural shows a possible future for Kratos, not a fate the game confirms as inevitable. Santa Monica Studio describes it as a choice: after the crisis, should Kratos continue to lead in a time of peace? The hopeful reading is that he can become a leader beyond war—but the mural does not prove that outcome is guaranteed.

What does Kratos see in the final mural?
At the end of God of War Ragnarök, the mural presents an image associated with Kratos and a future beyond the immediate crisis. Santa Monica Studio’s retrospective, “Past Lives, New Story – Shaping Valhalla’s Narrative with Kratos’ Past,” calls it “a possible future” and frames the moment as another choice for Kratos: whether he should still lead in a time of peace after the crisis has passed. That wording matters. The mural points toward a potential path for Kratos, not a guaranteed prediction. Its significance is not simply what might happen to him, but that he now faces a different question about who he chooses to be when survival and combat are no longer the only demands on him.

Does the mural mean Kratos was destined to die?
No. The studio’s description does not say that Kratos is destined to die, nor does it identify the mural as an unavoidable ending. It calls the image a possible future and emphasizes Kratos’s choice. A reading in which the mural proves his death or an immutable fate goes beyond what that official explanation establishes.
The distinction is especially important because the story has already shown that prophecies can shape how characters understand events without proving that every image or prediction must come to pass. The final mural leaves room for uncertainty and agency; it is not a definitive statement that Kratos’s future has been settled.

How do the Jötunheim murals and Giant prophecy add context?
The mural carries weight because prophecy and the Giants’ knowledge have been part of the story since God of War (2018). In the Jötunheim temple, the family discovers murals depicting their journey. PlayStation’s official recap explains that Faye is revealed as a Giant and that Atreus learns Loki was the name his mother gave him. PlayStation’s story recap
That history makes it natural to ask whether the final image is another fixed prediction. But the earlier revelations establish the importance of Giant foreknowledge; they do not, by themselves, establish that every mural records an unavoidable future. PlayStation’s recap describes the prophecy surrounding upheaval across the Nine Realms and deaths among the Aesir, including Odin and Thor. That broader context makes the relationship between prophecy and choice significant, but it does not override the studio’s explicit description of the final mural as a possible future.

What is the strongest interpretation of the ending?
The most grounded interpretation is cautiously hopeful: Kratos may become a leader associated with peace, but the mural presents that as a possibility rather than a certainty. After a life shaped by conflict, the image asks whether he can lead differently once the crisis is over.
Keep the distinction clear between what the game’s creators state and what viewers infer from the imagery. Santa Monica Studio identifies the mural as a possible future and describes a choice; the interpretation that it represents Kratos’s potential transformation into a peaceful leader follows from that framing. The official explanation does not say that this future cancels earlier prophecies or settles every question about how they work.
