In Kingdom Hearts, a heart is an inner self shaped in part by memory and bound to other people. It is both a real force within the story world and the series’ central emotional idea: people can stay connected even when they are apart. Hearts also sit at the center of the conflict between light and darkness, but the term changes with context—an individual heart, the heart of a world, and Kingdom Hearts are not interchangeable.
What is a heart in Kingdom Hearts?
Director Tetsuya Nomura called the heart “the theme of the series” in a 2009 Famitsu interview published in English translation by Kingdom Hearts Insider. He offered a simplified way to picture it: a being has a body, a soul that serves as its life source, and a heart with no physical form. In the published translation, he says, “Since the heart doesn’t have a form, memories play an important part in forming a heart.”
This is a broad explanation, not a rule that every game spells out in precisely the same way. It does clarify why hearts matter as more than a metaphor: in the story, they can be affected, lost, threatened, and sought after. Nor are hearts exclusive to people; the series also gives worlds hearts.
How do memories shape a heart?
Memory helps give a heart continuity: it ties a character’s present self to experiences, feelings, and relationships. Nomura discusses this again when explaining Nobodies—beings who lack their original hearts—in a translated Director’s Secret Report XIII published by KH13. He says memories help Nobodies form parts of their personality and emotions.

That explanation supports a connection between memory and identity, but it does not mean memory alone is the heart. Rather, memories can help a person retain a sense of self and preserve bonds with others. That makes memory especially significant in a story where separation, loss, and restoration repeatedly affect characters.
Why are hearts associated with connection?
For Nomura, connection is the plainest way to describe the original story’s emotional center. In a 2002 interview published in English translation by KH13, he says, “For the story, simply put, ‘connections’……” He also explains the idea this way: “Even apart, things which are connected are still connected.”

That is why a heart in Kingdom Hearts can signify more than an individual’s private feelings. It also represents the ties that endure through distance and separation. The series turns that emotional idea into part of its world: bonds between characters can matter even when they cannot be together.
What do light and darkness have to do with the heart?
Light and darkness give hearts a central conflict. Square Enix’s official series overview describes Kingdom Hearts as “the story of Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.” In the translated 2002 interview, Nomura also identifies the light Sora sees while entering Riku’s darkness as “the light of the heart.”

Does “heart” always mean the same thing?
No. The term has several related but distinct uses, and context matters:

- A world’s heart: a world-scale heart, distinct from one person’s heart. The translated Director’s Secret Report XIII distinguishes these uses and describes different Keyblade functions.
- Kingdom Hearts: a central story-world concept, not simply another name for an individual’s heart. The phrase appears in a series where hearts can belong to people or worlds, so the surrounding plot determines what it means.
Nomura’s body-soul-heart description is explicitly a simplified image, and the games develop their terminology across different stories. It is more accurate to treat these meanings as connected parts of the series’ world than to force them into one definition.

The official Square Enix overview describes Sora travelling through Disney worlds with Donald and Goofy to stop the Heartless invasion. That premise makes hearts literal elements of the plot: the Heartless, the worlds, and the search for Kingdom Hearts all depend on the series’ story-world meaning of “heart.”

The plot’s concrete use of hearts and the theme of connection are therefore intertwined, even though not every use of the word points to exactly the same thing.
