It can also be used as a verb meaning to throw or launch something. It is slang, not a precise tactical callout or a universal game command.
How players use “yeet”
A Fortnite glossary updated in 2019 describes “YEET” or “YA-YEET” as an exclamation associated with throwing a grenade or projectile, taking a sniper shot, or winning a game. The examples show why the word depends on context: it can convey excitement during an action or celebrate a result, rather than name one specific move. Pro Game Guides’ Fortnite terms glossary is usage guidance, not a survey of how often players say it today.
In chat or voice, “yeet!” may amount to an enthusiastic “send it” or a burst of celebration. If you need teammates to coordinate, use a clear callout about the target, location, or action; “yeet” alone does not specify those details.
When “yeet” means a throw or launch
The word can also function as a verb for throwing or launching something. One official Fortnite Creative island listing, “Yeet Em King Of The Hill”, describes its activity as “Yeet Players Off the Hill.” That wording fits the island’s premise; it does not establish “yeet” as a general Fortnite mechanic or command.

Epic’s promotional use of the word
Epic Games used the term in promotional copy for Lazar & Fresh’s Super Knockback tournament. Its March 1, 2021 announcement, “Lazarbeam Enters the Fortnite Icon Series!”, closes with: “Yeet yourself far in this contest of legends.” This is a playful line about the event, not a formal definition.

Fan-maintained Fortnite Wiki pages list a “Yeet” emoticon and a “Dip” emote. These are cosmetic names, not explanations of what players mean when they say “yeet.” The pages are Yeet and Dip; check the in-game client for current availability or unlock details.
