DRM-free means a game has no technical copy protection or required online activation that blocks installing or playing its supported offline content. GOG’s published standard is that a game should work without Galaxy authentication, without the Galaxy client, and without an internet connection for offline-capable play. Online-only features, such as multiplayer, may still require a connection. DRM-free describes practical access to game files—not ownership of the game’s copyright or permission to redistribute it.
What DRM-free means
Digital rights management (DRM) is technology that restricts how software can be installed, copied, or activated. A DRM-free game is distributed without those technical restrictions. GOG’s quality-assurance guidance describes its standard in terms of installation, copying, and activation, while its developer documentation says games should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, Galaxy client presence, or internet availability for supported offline play.
That standard is specific to GOG. Store policies can differ, and a label should be checked against the particular game and version. GOG’s quality-assurance guidance and developer documentation explain its approach.
Does DRM-free mean you own the game?
It means you can keep and use the game files with fewer technical barriers; it does not transfer copyright or grant unrestricted rights to copy or redistribute the game. GOG’s terms and conditions govern the purchase and use of its products. In everyday conversation, “owning” a DRM-free game often means having a usable copy under your control, not owning the underlying intellectual property.

Can you play a DRM-free game offline?
Often, yes, if the game supports offline play. Under GOG’s published standard, offline-capable game content should not require Galaxy or an internet connection to install or play. But a game’s online-dependent features remain online-dependent: multiplayer, cloud services, and other account-linked functions may need connectivity. Check the individual product’s details for any stated exceptions.
“Offline mode” is not the same as “DRM-free.” Steam says its Offline Mode lets players use Steam games without an active Steam Network connection, but also notes that a game may not start in Offline Mode. An offline option therefore does not prove that a title has no DRM. See Steam Support’s Offline Mode guidance.

Can you reinstall a DRM-free game later?
If you have retained the game’s offline installer, you can use that copy for a later installation without downloading the game from the storefront again. GOG says buyers can back up files and install as often as needed; its offline installer documentation describes how those installers are provided.
- Open the game in your GOG library and locate the offline installer download.
- Download the installer and keep it in storage you control, such as a backup drive.
- Keep any listed dependencies and the game’s system requirements alongside the installer so you have the information needed for a future setup.
- For a reinstall, run the saved installer on a compatible system. If you want a later update, check the storefront for a newer installer or update first.
GOG notes that an offline installer can take several hours to appear after a build is published, so a newly released update may not be reflected in the installer immediately.

What a backup does—and does not—preserve
A saved installer preserves the downloaded build, giving you a practical way to reinstall without relying on a fresh store download. It is not a guarantee of future updates, compatibility with operating systems released later, continued access to your store account, or permanent storefront service. Those are separate dependencies from DRM on the game files themselves.

When deciding whether a particular store version meets your needs, compare the actual capabilities rather than relying on a general “offline” label:

- Launcher: Is a client required to install or start the game?
- Activation: Does installation or first launch require an internet connection?
- Installer: Is a standalone offline installer available to keep?
- Offline content: Does the single-player game work without a connection?
- Connected features: Which multiplayer, cloud, or account-linked features need internet access?
- Exceptions: Does the product page name any limitations for that game or version?
GOG’s no-DRM policy and Steam’s Offline Mode address different questions. Check the game’s specific requirements and available files rather than treating “offline” as synonymous with “DRM-free.”
