There is no verified universal enchant list for heirloom gear. The practical answer, as of October 2026, is to choose enchants for the character and gear slot you are leveling, then confirm that the enchant’s level and item restrictions match the heirloom’s current in-game tooltip before you apply it. Older slot-by-slot lists should not be treated as a current best-in-slot guide, because heirloom rules have changed over several expansions and the evidence available for this question is thin.
Why there is no single answer
Heirlooms exist mainly to speed up leveling on alternate characters. Blizzard’s older heirloom overview describes them in exactly those terms and explains how their level scaling worked under the system in effect when that page was written. That scaling has changed since, so any article that names a fixed upgrade cap or a permanent list of best enchants is working from outdated rules.
The enchant question is also not established across the board. Whether a given enchant is available, and whether it is worth the cost, depends on the heirloom slot, the character’s level, and the heirloom’s current upgrade state. No official table maps those variables to recommended enchants, and the community reference materials reviewed are useful background rather than a final authority on live behavior.
What is and is not established
- Heirlooms are built for alternate characters. Blizzard’s own heirloom description and its 2026 Forever Legacy announcement both frame the items around alternate-character play. Neither announcement recommends specific enchants.
- Low-level enchant behavior is reported, not documented. A 2026 player discussion asks whether heirloom enchants stop working before character level 10. That is a player report of uncertainty. It is not an official rule, and it should be tested on your own character before you rely on it.
- Enchant restrictions are set per enchant. Each enchant carries its own level or item-level requirement. Check that requirement against the heirloom in front of you rather than against a remembered guide.
- Transfer behavior has changed over time. In its Patch 6.1 announcement dated February 6, 2015, Blizzard said that enchanted heirloom gear already on a character would remain there and remain usable across account characters. That was guidance for the transition at the time. It is not a current promise, so confirm transfer behavior in game before you spend effort enchanting an item you plan to move.
How to choose an enchant
Because no ranking exists, decide using five questions. Each one narrows the choice to enchants that actually fit your situation.

- Which slot is this? Confirm the heirloom is in a slot that accepts the enchant you have in mind. Not every slot offers the same options.
- What level is the character? Read the enchant’s minimum-level requirement. If the character is below it, the enchant cannot be applied yet, regardless of how the heirloom scales.
- What is the heirloom’s current upgrade state? Open the heirloom’s tooltip and note its present item level and upgrade status. Enchant application can depend on these values.
- What are you leveling for? A character you are pushing through content quickly has different needs from one you are running for a role or for a low-effort alt. Pick the enchant that matches the activity.
- Will this item move to another character? If you plan to transfer it, check the current transfer rules in game first and keep the enchant decision reversible where you can.
Checking an enchant before you apply it
Use the following sequence each time. It takes a minute and prevents most wasted spending.
- Note the character’s current level and the heirloom’s current item level and upgrade state.
- Look at the enchant’s own requirements and confirm both the level and the item restriction are met.
- Check that the heirloom’s slot accepts that enchant.
- If the enchant you want is not offered, do not assume it is broken. Recheck the character level and the heirloom’s upgrade state first, then compare against the level reports and tooltip text.
- Only then apply the enchant, and record the character level and heirloom state so you can recognize any later change.
When the evidence is not enough
If you need a definitive answer for a specific heirloom, the reliable test is the live game on your own character. Note the patch you are on, the character level, the heirloom’s item level and upgrade state, and the realm region if you suspect regional differences. Those four details make a result meaningful to other players, and they make your own checks repeatable when the game changes again.

Until a current official enchant table is published, treat any slot-by-slot ranking you find online as a hypothesis to test rather than a settled recommendation.
Blizzard’s 2026 Forever Legacy announcement is worth reading for the broader alternate-character context. It does not include enchant guidance, so it should not be cited for enchant choices.
