Ghost of Tsushima runs on Sucker Punch Productions’ in-house engine technology. PlayStation confirmed that Nixxes worked to bring that technology to the PC version, but the official sources cited here do not give the engine a separate public name.
What engine does Ghost of Tsushima use?
It uses Sucker Punch Productions’ in-house engine technology. In its March 6, 2024 announcement of the PC version, Nixxes said it had been working to bring “the Sucker Punch in-house engine technology to PC.” PlayStation’s announcement is the clearest official identification.

The reviewed official sources do not publish a distinct branded name for the engine. They also do not identify it as Unreal Engine or another named commercial engine, so it is more accurate to call it Sucker Punch’s in-house engine than to assign it an unsupported product name.
What does the PC version’s port tell us?
Nixxes described bringing Sucker Punch’s engine technology to PC and implementing PC features, including unlocked frame rates, graphics settings and presets, and customizable mouse and keyboard controls. That establishes that the PC release required work to adapt the technology and add PC-specific options. It does not establish that the PC and console builds use identical internal implementations.

Why doesn’t the answer include an engine brand?
Sucker Punch’s technical director Adrian Bentley describes the studio’s approach as beginning with “understanding the hardware and what our engine does well,” then choosing technology that supports the project’s vision. That supports the in-house-engine description, but it is not a formal engine name or a statement about a specific commercial engine. Sony Group’s interview with Sucker Punch.

A 2020 Sucker Punch launch retrospective says the game’s scale expanded across world size, foliage, dialogue, missions, and characters. The studio noted that most of its tools from inFamous were not up to the task, with its visual-effects system as an exception. The retrospective gives development context, not the name or technical architecture of Ghost of Tsushima’s engine. Read the retrospective.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the engine affect how you play on PC?
The engine identification alone does not determine which PC features you can use; those depend on the PC version’s settings and your hardware. If you use a DualSense controller, PlayStation lists haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support for the PC release. A wired connection is required for the full range of those controller features. This is accessory information, not evidence about the engine itself. See PlayStation’s PC features page.
