There is no publicly confirmed answer for Paradox Development Studio’s future games. The studio’s documented historical technology pairing is Clausewitz, a reusable game-engine codebase, and Jomini, a layer developed for top-down, map-based games. Paradox described that relationship in 2018; it does not establish which technology powers later releases or future projects.
What is confirmed about Paradox’s engine technology?
In an October 14, 2018 interview with GamesBeat, Paradox engine team lead John Wordsworth described Clausewitz and Jomini as complementary technologies. Clausewitz was reusable code for making games, while Jomini was built specifically for top-down, map-based games.
Wordsworth framed the broader goal as sharing technology across projects to help the studio make “bigger games, better games, faster.” That is a description of Paradox’s direction at the time of the interview—not a confirmation of the engine stack in any particular current or future game.
Clausewitz: reusable engine code
In Wordsworth’s account, Clausewitz was the general, reusable foundation for making games. The interview does not provide a current version number or a release-by-release list of titles using it.

- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Jomini: technology for map-based games
Wordsworth said Jomini was specifically for top-down, map-based games. It should be understood as a specialized layer in the historical pairing, not as evidence that it replaced Clausewitz or is present in every later Paradox title.
What did the technology work mean for designers and modders?
The 2018 interview also emphasized creator-facing tools. Wordsworth described efforts such as live map editing, making changes easier for developers, and supporting custom interfaces. He summarized the shift by saying, “People are the tools. That’s the biggest thing we’re changing.”

Those comments explain the tooling ambitions discussed in that interview. They do not establish that every named capability appears in every subsequent game, nor do they amount to a current feature list for the studio’s development environment.
Does Europa Universalis V use Clausewitz or Jomini?
The official materials reviewed do not name Europa Universalis V’s engine. Paradox Interactive’s Annual Report 2025 and the game’s Steam listing identify Paradox Tinto as its developer; Steam lists a November 4, 2025 release. Neither source identifies the engine.

EU V is therefore not a confirmed example of a Paradox Development Studio release or of a particular PDS engine. Paradox Tinto is a different studio, and the 2018 Clausewitz–Jomini account cannot fill in the missing engine information.

Paradox Interactive is the publisher, while Paradox Development Studio is one of its internal studios. The company’s company overview distinguishes its internal studios from the wider publishing portfolio, which also includes externally developed games. A game published under the Paradox name is not automatically a PDS game or evidence of PDS technology.
