For a balanced 4-1-2-1-2 (2) setup in EA SPORTS FC 24, start with Balanced defense at 40 width and 55 depth, then use Balanced build-up, Forward Runs, 40 attacking width and 70 players in the box. Keep both fullbacks back, anchor the diamond with a stay-back CDM on Cover Center, and let the two strikers attack space behind the defense. This is a published guide’s starting point—not a universally proven best setup—and its narrow shape leaves the flanks as the main trade-off.
Recommended 4-1-2-1-2 (2) custom tactics
The narrow version of the formation has a CDM, two central midfielders, a CAM and two strikers. The settings below are Dexerto’s FC 24 recommendation, updated September 9, 2024. Treat them as a baseline to adapt to your squad and play style.

Dexerto’s compact settings are intended to keep options close for combinations through the middle and make central space harder for opponents to exploit. The slider values are configuration recommendations, not measured performance statistics.
Player instructions for the narrow diamond
Keep the defensive base protected while giving the midfield and forwards clear attacking roles. These are verbal player instructions, separate from the numbered tactical sliders above.

The two fullbacks staying back and the CDM protecting the center form the conservative base of this recommendation. The midfielders and front three provide forward runs and options around the box.
Why the formation works through the middle—and where it is vulnerable
The diamond concentrates four midfield roles and two strikers around the center. That gives you short passing routes for central combinations and quick attacks through the lines. The same compactness means the formation has no natural wide midfielders: your fullbacks are its primary source of width, and the flanks can be exposed if opponents attack outside.

Keeping both fullbacks back favors defensive security, but it can make it harder to stretch a defense. If you need more width, try advancing one fullback and assess whether the added support is worth the space left behind. Strong fullbacks are especially useful in this shape; the adjustment is a tactical experiment, not a guaranteed improvement.
An alternative: Direct Passing and more attacking width
A second FC 24 guide, published September 23, 2023, offers a different attacking setup. It keeps the same defensive settings but uses Direct Passing, slightly more width and seven players in the box.

Try the alternative if you prefer Direct Passing and a little more attacking width, or want to commit fewer players into the box than the baseline. The guides do not report a controlled comparison, so their recommendations do not establish that one setup is objectively better.
How to choose between the two setups
- Forward Runs or Direct Passing: choose based on whether you prefer runners attacking space or passing options that support the move.
- 40 or 45 attacking width: the wider value offers a modest adjustment, but does not change the diamond’s reliance on fullbacks for width.
- 70 or seven players in the box: these are the values given by the respective guides. Choose the guide’s setting that better fits how many players you want committed around the box; neither value is supported as a universal optimum.
- Fullback risk: keeping both back prioritizes cover; advancing one can add width but also gives the opponent more room to attack that side.
Where to set up tactics in FC 24
EA describes Tactical Presets in Career Mode as preconfigured starting points; changing a preset makes it Custom. Presets work with available formations, while custom presets may have incompatibilities. EA’s explanation provides the game context, not an endorsement of either third-party setup. Menu labels and available options can vary by mode, so use the tactics and formation controls available in the mode you are playing.
