Windows could not read one of the roughly 1 KB records in the Master File Table (MFT), the index that tells it a file’s name, timestamps and location. The file’s data blocks may still be present, but repairing the index can change or remove metadata. If the drive contains important games, saves or captures, stop writing to it, copy readable data, and make a read-only image or clone before running repair scans.
What the error actually describes
NTFS keeps a Master File Table on each volume. Every file and directory has a file-record segment in that table. Oxford Data Recovery’s technical guidance describes a segment as a 1 KB record containing details such as the file name, timestamps and the locations of the file’s contents. CHKDSK is reporting that it could not read one of those records.

That record is an index entry rather than the complete file. Think of it as a catalogue card that points Windows to the data blocks. If the card is unreadable, the data may remain on the disk while Windows loses the information needed to open it normally. This is why a game folder can show missing files even though some of the underlying bytes are still recoverable.
Oxford Data Recovery explains that when CHKDSK cannot read a 1 KB MFT record, “the actual contents of the file were probably still available on the disk”; the missing piece is the pointer that tells Windows how to find them.

The message applies to an NTFS volume. It does not, by itself, identify which game, save or user file was affected, and it does not prove that the drive’s mechanical parts have failed.
Why this matters on a gaming PC
A damaged MFT record can affect a Steam, Epic, Xbox or other library folder, a game’s configuration files, screenshots, recordings, mods, or save data. A launcher may report that a title is uninstalled or ask to redownload it when the files are still partly present. A save can also become inaccessible even if the game executable continues to run.
Do not launch games, install updates, verify files, move large libraries, or let a launcher automatically repair the volume while you are deciding what to do. Each write can overwrite sectors that a recovery program might otherwise use. If another disk contains a verified copy of the saves and captures, the risk is limited; if the only copy is on this volume, treat the data as valuable until it is safely duplicated.

Does “file record segment unreadable” mean the hard drive is failing?
Not necessarily. An interrupted write, an isolated bad sector or localized file-system corruption can produce a small number of unreadable records. The implication changes when the count grows or the scan behavior changes.
A few records
A small, stable number can be consistent with localized corruption. It still deserves a backup, because a single unreadable record can hide a save or directory, but the message alone does not establish a mechanical defect.

Hundreds of records
Cambridge Data Recovery warns that hundreds of unreadable records suggest the region containing the MFT may be failing. A CHKDSK pass that crawls, repeatedly retries the same area, makes unusual noises, or produces a flood of new messages should be treated as possible media degradation rather than a routine software glitch.
What SMART can and cannot tell you
SMART indicators and the way the scan behaves are useful evidence alongside the record count. A clean-looking SMART summary does not make unreadable data safe, and a warning does not tell you which files can be recovered. Use those indicators to choose a cautious response, not as permission to keep testing a fragile disk.

- Stop normal writes. Close games and launchers, pause downloads, disable automatic updates, and avoid creating new files on the affected volume.
- Copy what opens normally. Start with irreplaceable saves, recordings, photos and documents, then copy replaceable game installations. Use a different physical disk and confirm that important files open from the copy.
- Record the situation. Note the drive letter, volume name, approximate number of unreadable records, scan speed and any SMART warnings. This helps you recognize whether the condition is worsening.
- Choose imaging before repair when the files matter. A bit-for-bit, read-only image or clone gives recovery work a separate target and avoids repeatedly stressing the original.
An external hard drive with enough free capacity for the source volume is the central physical item needed for this step. The destination must be separate from the suspect disk; copying to another folder on the same disk does not protect against further media failure.
Image or clone the disk before experimenting
Imaging reads the source and writes a sector-level copy to separate storage. A clone writes that copy directly to another disk. The purpose is the same: preserve the original while recovery and repair are attempted on the duplicate.
Prepare
- Use destination storage with at least the capacity required by the source disk or image format.
- Connect the suspect drive as a secondary device rather than booting and using it as the active system disk.
- Make sure the destination contains no data you still need; cloning normally overwrites it.
During the read
A failing disk may slow dramatically when a bad area is encountered. Do not cancel and restart a marginal drive over and over: every pass forces more reads. Prefer imaging software that can log unreadable sectors and continue, then work from the resulting image. If the drive disconnects, repeatedly clicks, overheats or deteriorates quickly, stop DIY attempts and seek specialist recovery.

After the image
Disconnect or write-protect the original if possible. Mount the image read-only, copy accessible files, and perform any MFT reconstruction or file carving against that image. Oxford Data Recovery describes rebuilding the MFT or carving files from an image as recovery approaches; neither can guarantee that every file will be complete.
Should you run CHKDSK /f or /r?
Run CHKDSK only after important data is backed up or when losing unrecoverable metadata is acceptable. It is a repair utility, not a preservation tool. CHKDSK can restore logical consistency, but it cannot recreate bytes that the device cannot read. When metadata cannot be resolved, repair may discard records or detach files so that the volume can be made internally consistent.
chkdsk X: /f
Replace X: with the affected volume’s letter. The /f option asks Windows to fix logical file-system errors. It can change directory and MFT metadata, so use it on a verified copy or after imaging when the files are important.
chkdsk X: /r
The /r option performs a much more intensive read intended to locate bad sectors and recover readable information. On a disk with weak or failing media, that extra reading can take a very long time and can accelerate stress on the device. It is especially inappropriate as a first move when no backup or image exists.
Why repeated passes are risky
Cambridge Data Recovery cautions that repeated CHKDSK passes can force rereads and discard records that recovery might otherwise use. If the first pass reports a growing number of unreadable records, stalls, or produces new symptoms, stop repair attempts and return to imaging or professional recovery.

Choose the next step by data value and drive behavior

A vendor tutorial from AOMEI lists connecting the disk as secondary, cloning to a new disk and using CHKDSK as possible responses. Those are procedural suggestions, not a promise that a clone or repair will recover every file.
What recovery can and cannot restore
When the data blocks survive
If only the MFT pointer is unreadable, recovery software may locate the file through alternate metadata, an MFT mirror, directory information or known file signatures. The result can include the original name and folder, or it may be recovered with a generic name and incomplete metadata.
When sectors are unreadable
No software can reconstruct bytes the storage device cannot return. A recovered game archive may fail an integrity check, a video may contain damaged frames, and a save may be unusable even when it has the correct file extension. Keep the original image and work on copies so that one failed attempt does not remove later options.
Why reinstalling is different from recovering
Reinstalling a game replaces executable and asset files but usually does not restore personal saves, screenshots or custom configuration stored elsewhere. Confirm where each title stores saves before deleting the original volume. Cloud synchronization can help only if the service has a current, uncorrupted copy; do not allow a blank or damaged local state to overwrite a good cloud state.

Common symptoms after the message
The game launcher says the title is missing
Do not immediately choose “uninstall” or “repair.” Copy the library directory first, image the volume if the files matter, and only then test the launcher’s verification function on the duplicate. Verification writes metadata and may replace files, which is useful after preservation but risky before it.

Windows asks to format the drive
Cancel the format prompt. Formatting creates a new file system and can overwrite the metadata you need for recovery. Preserve the disk, make an image, and use recovery software or a specialist on that image.
CHKDSK appears frozen
A long pause can reflect repeated reads of a weak sector, especially with /r. Note the elapsed time and drive sounds rather than force-shutting down immediately. If the disk is deteriorating or the scan repeatedly retries, stop further passes and prioritize imaging or professional assistance.
Only one folder or save is affected
Copy every readable file from the volume before investigating that folder. Localized corruption can spread or reveal additional unreadable records when the disk is accessed, so a small initial symptom is not a substitute for a backup.
Preventing a repeat on game storage
- Keep at least one independently stored backup of saves, captures and configuration files; a second folder on the same disk is not an independent backup.
- Let shutdowns and updates finish, and avoid disconnecting external game drives while they are active.
- Monitor drive health and unusual slowdowns, but treat monitoring as an early-warning aid rather than proof that data is safe.
- Separate replaceable game installations from irreplaceable personal files when practical, so a library repair does not become the only copy of a save.
Bottom line for “file record segment unreadable”
The message means Windows could not read an approximately 1 KB NTFS MFT record. The file’s content may still be on the disk, but the index that locates it is damaged or inaccessible. A few records can be localized corruption; hundreds, a flood of errors or a crawling scan raise concern about a failing MFT region or storage media. Protect the data first: stop writes, copy what you can, image or clone to separate storage, and only then consider CHKDSK. If the data is irreplaceable or the drive is rapidly degrading, specialist recovery is safer than repeated repair scans.
