Steam does not publish a list of accepted email providers or domains. Its support guidance asks you to enter the address you want on your account, complete the verification step Steam sends to it, and, if that message never arrives, try an address from a different email provider. Whether a particular address works is decided by that verification flow, not by a published allow-list, so no provider such as Gmail, Outlook, a school address, or a custom domain can be guaranteed in advance.
How the contact-email verification works
Steam’s help article on changing the contact email for a Steam account describes one process for any address. Follow the steps below in Steam’s account settings.
- Sign in to Steam and open your account settings, then the section where your contact email is managed.
- Enter the new email address you want Steam to use.
- Open the verification email Steam sends to that inbox and follow the link in it.
- Check your Steam account details afterward. A verified address is marked “Verified” on the Steam Account Details page.
Steam’s help text names the account settings area generally rather than giving a fixed menu path, so use the label that appears in your client or on the Steam website when you reach that page. The step that matters is the link: until you click it, Steam treats the new address as unconfirmed.
Why no provider list exists
The official pages on this topic do not enumerate approved email providers or domains. They also do not name a blocked list, a required domain type, or a percentage of addresses that succeed. That means a claim such as “Steam accepts Gmail but not disposable addresses” goes beyond what Steam has published. What Steam does say is that verification is the test, and that a failed delivery is a reason to switch to a different provider rather than a reason to assume your account is broken.

Steam’s help pages reviewed for this article do not show a publication date. Treat the wording as Steam’s current published guidance rather than guidance tied to a specific year.
When the verification email does not arrive
Steam’s contact-email help page states: “If you don’t receive the email, please try using an email address with a different email provider.” Work through these checks before you give up on an address:
- Check the spam, junk, or promotions folder of the inbox you entered, not just the primary view.
- Confirm you typed the address exactly. A single wrong character sends the message nowhere you can see.
- Wait for the message to arrive before resubmitting. Repeated requests do not speed up delivery.
- If the message still does not arrive, enter an address from a different email provider and verify that one instead.
The point of the last step is practical: if one provider’s mail is being filtered or blocked for your account, a different inbox avoids the dead end. Steam’s guidance does not say which provider is the problem in any given case.

- The iRecovery Stick extracts messages, call history, contacts, web history, calendar appointments, photos, voice memos, email accounts, and map history directly from iPhone and iPad devices. Running entirely from the USB stick with no software installed on the device or computer, it leaves no trace that an extraction was performed.
- Uncover images concealed using photo-hiding apps and use the iSearch keyword function to search for specific words, names, phone numbers, or symbols across the entire device at once, eliminating the need to manually browse through individual apps and folders. Bookmark important findings and export content for reporting and analysis.
- The iRecovery Stick processes phone backup files stored on your Windows PC or copied from a Mac computer. If a device was backed up to a computer before items were deleted, those items may still be recoverable from the backup. Photos sent in text message conversations but deleted from the photo library may also be recovered if the conversation was not deleted.
- The iRecovery Stick requires physical access to the target device. The user must be able to disable the passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID before extraction begins. If the device was previously backed up to a computer using a password, that password will also be required to process the backup data.
- Use the iRecovery Stick on as many iPhone and iPad devices as needed with no per-device fees. Free lifetime updates ensure ongoing compatibility with future iOS versions, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
Steam Guard emails go to the registered address
Steam Guard codes are a separate question from the contact-email change. Steam’s Steam Guard code help page says: “Steam Guard emails are sent to the last email address registered for your Steam account.” When a Steam Guard code does not show up, the inbox to check is the one currently registered to the account, not the one you intended to switch to. If you are mid-change, the old address is still the one receiving those codes until the new one is confirmed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo keep these messages from being filtered, Steam recommends adding these two senders to your trusted list:
If a code is delayed, Steam’s code-help page advises requesting a new one rather than reusing an earlier code.

The Steam Mobile app as an alternative
Steam’s Steam Guard guidance also says codes can be received through the Steam Mobile app’s authenticator option. This is a different delivery path, not a requirement that any email provider be used. If you cannot reliably receive email at a given address, the app route avoids that dependency for Steam Guard codes. It does not change the contact-email verification process described above, which still runs through an email link.
What a verified address does for your account
Steam’s change-email page says it attempts email verification at account creation or first purchase, and that this supports account recovery. In practice, a verified address is the one Steam can use to help you regain access if your account is hijacked or you lose sign-in details. Steam’s separate guidance on recovering a stolen or hijacked account is linked in the sources below.
Choosing an address that will hold up
Because Steam does not publish a list, the decision comes down to three checks that Steam’s guidance does establish:
| Question | Why it matters | What Steam’s guidance says |
|---|---|---|
| Can you open the inbox yourself, today? | You must click the verification link and read Steam Guard codes. | Verification is completed by following the link Steam emails to the address. |
| Does the verification email arrive? | Without it, the new address is not confirmed. | If it does not arrive, try an address from a different email provider. |
| Will it still be reliable for recovery? | Steam links verification with account recovery. | Verified status is shown on the Steam Account Details page. |
A school or work address may be reliable for a few years and then disappear after you leave. Steam’s guidance does not address that scenario, so it is a judgment call you should make before verifying, not something Steam will fix afterward.
