Grand Theft Auto VI uses an updated version of Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), Rockstar Games’ proprietary technology family. That is the most defensible answer based on RAGE’s documented use across Rockstar’s major open-world games and current technical reporting that identifies an updated RAGE engine for GTA VI.
Rockstar has not published a numbered engine release, so labels such as “RAGE 9” are speculation. The company also has not said that it completely replaced RAGE, disclosed a renderer name, or published targets for resolution, ray tracing or frame rate.

The short answer: GTA 6 runs on an updated RAGE engine
When people ask what engine GTA 6 is made in, the accurate formulation is: Grand Theft Auto VI runs on an updated iteration of the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, usually abbreviated RAGE. RAGE is Rockstar’s in-house engine technology, not a publicly licensed engine such as Unreal Engine.

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI materials identify the game, its setting and its console platforms, but they do not name a numbered RAGE build or provide a formal engine specification. A current technical reference describes GTA VI as running on an updated version of RAGE, based on Rockstar-published trailers and screenshots. That is strong supporting evidence, but it is reporting rather than a Rockstar engineering document.
#1 Best Overall
Consequently, three statements should be kept separate:
- Well supported: GTA VI continues Rockstar’s RAGE technology family.
- Reasonable inference: The engine has been substantially modernized for current-generation consoles and the game’s world.
- Unconfirmed: A public name such as “RAGE 9,” a total rewrite, a particular graphics API, or any exact performance specification.
What RAGE means at Rockstar
RAGE stands for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine. It is a proprietary technology family that Rockstar develops internally for its large, systems-heavy games. The documented lineage begins with Rockstar Games Presents: Table Tennis and continues through Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Calling it a “technology family” is more accurate than treating RAGE as one frozen program. A game engine contains many subsystems—rendering, animation, physics, audio, artificial intelligence, networking, asset tools and world streaming. Those systems can be replaced, rewritten or heavily extended while a studio continues to describe the overall technology as its own engine. RAGE used for an earlier game therefore does not imply that GTA VI uses the same code, tools or visual capabilities unchanged.
Why Rockstar keeps its own engine
Rockstar’s flagship games combine a large streamed world with cinematic missions, crowds, vehicles, character animation, physics and extensive audio. Owning the core technology lets the studio tune those systems together and control the development tools used by its teams. It also avoids the licensing and roadmap constraints that come with adopting a general-purpose third-party engine.
That ownership does not make RAGE automatically better than every other engine. It means Rockstar can shape the engine around its particular open-world design, target platforms and production pipeline. Public information is not detailed enough for a fair benchmark against another engine.
What Rockstar has officially confirmed about GTA VI
Rockstar’s official game page places GTA VI in the fictional state of Leonida, including Vice City, and lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the announced platforms. Take-Two’s announcement on 4 December 2023 also said the game was coming to those two console families.
Rockstar has shown the game using footage captured from the game itself. Its Newswire description states: “Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, this extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI showcases the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” This confirms the source of that presentation and the PlayStation 5 capture platform; it does not establish a final resolution or frame-rate target.

Details the official pages do not provide
The reviewed official pages do not identify any of the following:
- A numbered RAGE version.
- The graphics API or renderer used by the shipped game.
- Ray-tracing modes or whether a specific effect is enabled in every mode.
- A target or locked frame rate.
- Output resolution, dynamic-resolution behavior or image-reconstruction method.
- A polygon count, engine download size or development cost.
Those omissions are normal for a game announcement. In-game footage can demonstrate a visual result, but it cannot by itself reveal the exact internal implementation or guarantee the settings used in the final release.
Why the “updated RAGE” conclusion is the strongest one
The conclusion rests on continuity and current technical reporting rather than on a leaked version number. RAGE has powered Rockstar’s major console releases for years, and GTA VI is the next mainline open-world project from the same studio. A current GTA VI technology reference explicitly calls the engine an updated version of RAGE and bases its observations on Rockstar’s trailers and screenshots.

That evidence supports continuity with substantial change. New hardware, larger crowds, more detailed environments, modern lighting and revised animation can require major architectural work without turning the technology into an entirely unrelated engine. “Updated RAGE” therefore describes both parts of what is known: the lineage remains Rockstar’s, while the implementation has evolved.
Is GTA 6 using “RAGE 9”?
Rockstar has not publicly confirmed the name “RAGE 9.” The number is an internet shorthand, not an official specification in the materials available for GTA VI.
Numbering can be misleading even when a studio uses internal milestones. Engine development is rarely a simple sequence in which every revision becomes a public product. Teams may maintain branches, replace subsystems independently or share technology between projects. Without a statement from Rockstar, assigning a number creates false precision.
Use “an updated RAGE engine” when explaining the technology. Treat “RAGE 9” as an unverified label unless Rockstar later publishes documentation that uses it.
Was RAGE completely rebuilt for GTA VI?
Former Rockstar audio designer Rob Carr said he would be amazed if Rockstar had not rebuilt most of RAGE, given how much technology architecture had advanced since Grand Theft Auto V. Carr’s experience makes the observation useful context, but he was not presented as a current GTA VI engineer and did not provide an official build description.

His comment can support a cautious expectation of extensive modernization. It cannot prove that every subsystem was rewritten, that the old engine was discarded, or that GTA VI uses a brand-new engine under another name. The defensible wording is that RAGE has likely undergone major evolution; a “complete rebuild” remains unconfirmed.
Does GTA 6 use Unreal Engine 5?
There is no official confirmation that GTA VI uses Unreal Engine 5. The available evidence points to Rockstar’s own RAGE technology instead. The distinction is about ownership and lineage, not a claim that one engine is universally superior.
| Question | What is established | What remains unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Engine family | RAGE is the well-supported answer for GTA VI. | The exact internal build and subsystem versions. |
| Ownership model | RAGE is Rockstar’s proprietary technology family. | Which external middleware packages, if any, are integrated. |
| World technology | Official footage shows a large, detailed open-world presentation. | The specific streaming, culling and simulation implementation. |
| Rendering | Footage demonstrates the visual output Rockstar chose to show. | Renderer name, graphics API, ray-tracing modes and reconstruction method. |
| Performance | PlayStation 5 is identified as the capture platform; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are announced platforms. | Resolution targets, frame-rate modes and final console settings. |
Rockstar could use third-party libraries inside a proprietary engine, as many studios do, without changing the answer to the reader’s question. The engine family and the middleware used for individual tasks are different layers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs GTA 6 built on the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine?
The most useful answer is: it is part of the same RAGE lineage, but “the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine” is not a precise public name for GTA VI’s build. Red Dead Redemption 2 used Rockstar’s RAGE technology, so the games can share tools, architectural ideas and technology heritage. That does not establish that GTA VI copied the Red Dead Redemption 2 executable or retains every subsystem unchanged.
Engine families evolve between projects. A studio may port a mature system, replace it for new hardware, or maintain different branches for different games. Unless Rockstar publishes a component-level comparison, claims that GTA VI is simply running on the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine overstate what is known.

Rockstar has not published a subsystem list for GTA VI, so the following are engineering responsibilities implied by the game’s format, not a disclosure of its internal implementation.
Streaming a large world
An open-world game must load and unload terrain, buildings, interiors, vehicles, pedestrians, effects and audio as the player moves. The engine coordinates storage, memory and level-of-detail changes so distant content can be simplified while nearby content becomes interactive. The size of the world alone does not reveal the technique or memory budget used.
Animation and crowds
GTA’s design depends on many characters and vehicles behaving at once. Animation systems blend locomotion, reactions, combat and cinematic actions, while simulation systems schedule activity for entities that may be close to or far from the player. Footage can show the result, but not the number of active agents or the rules used to manage them.
Physics, vehicles and destruction
Driving, collisions, ragdolls and environmental reactions require coordinated physics and gameplay code. A proprietary engine lets Rockstar tune those systems with vehicle handling, mission scripting and camera behavior. No authoritative GTA VI figures for physics accuracy, object counts or destruction scope have been published.
Lighting and materials
Modern scenes combine geometry, materials, shadows, reflections, atmospheric effects and post-processing. The trailers demonstrate Rockstar’s chosen look, but they do not identify whether a particular shot uses hardware ray tracing, a precomputed technique, screen-space effects or a combination.
Will GTA 6 run at 60 frames per second?
There is no confirmed GTA VI frame-rate target. Rockstar’s official materials identify the capture platform and announced consoles, but they do not promise 30 frames per second, 60 frames per second or a selectable performance mode.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer a final target from trailer playback. Video may be edited, encoded at a different frame rate or captured under settings that are not offered to players. A console’s hardware capability also does not prove the performance mode a developer will ship. Wait for Rockstar’s technical specifications or reliable measurements of the released game before treating a frame-rate claim as fact.
How to evaluate future engine claims
- Check who made the statement. A Rockstar technical document or developer interview carries more weight than an unattributed social-media post.
- Separate observation from identification. A trailer can show visual effects; it cannot, by itself, name the engine version or graphics API.
- Look for scope and date. A statement about an early build, a trailer capture or a final console mode may describe different things.
- Keep labels precise. “Updated RAGE” is supported; “RAGE 9,” “fully rebuilt” and exact performance numbers need additional confirmation.
- Distinguish engine from middleware. A proprietary engine can incorporate licensed audio, physics, animation or networking components without becoming a third-party engine.
Platforms and what that means for the engine discussion
The announced launch-platform listing is PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s statement that the extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5 tells readers how that particular material was produced, not that the Xbox version uses a different engine.
Multi-platform releases commonly share a core engine while adapting graphics settings, memory use, input, platform services and certification requirements for each console. Until Rockstar describes those adaptations, it is safer to discuss one RAGE-based technology family targeting both console platforms than to claim platform-specific engine branches.
Bottom line on GTA VI’s engine
GTA VI is best described as using an updated Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). RAGE’s continuity across Table Tennis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, together with current GTA VI technical reporting, makes that the evidence-based answer.
