Game Science co-founder and art director Yang Qi was reported to have said that 30% of Black Myth: Wukong’s player base came from outside China. That is a reported share of players—not a confirmed regional sales breakdown. The often-repeated estimate of 7.5 million copies outside China comes from applying that percentage to a separate estimate of 25 million total sales.
What does the 30% figure refer to?
In a February 24, 2025 report, 80 Level attributed the figure to Yang Qi and described it as the share of the game’s player base from outside China. The report says Yang made the remark at the West Lake Art Forum at the China Academy of Art’s School of Animation and Games.

That distinction matters: the closest report of Yang’s remark concerns players, while the headline’s claim about sales implies a count of copies sold by region. The reported percentage does not, by itself, establish that 30% of units sold were outside China.
Where did the 7.5 million estimate come from?
80 Level combined the 30% player-base figure with an approximately 25-million-copy total attributed to a January 30 Niko Partners report. Applying 30% to 25 million gives 7.5 million. That number is 80 Level’s arithmetic estimate, not a regional sales total directly announced by Game Science or independently established as audited sales.

Why do reports describe the figure as international sales?
Push Square also reported on February 24, 2025 that roughly 30% of sales were international, alongside the approximately 25-million total it attributed to Niko Partners. That is a secondary account of the claim; it does not provide an independently measured regional unit count. The difference in wording across these reports is why the safest reading is to call 30% an attributed player-base figure and 7.5 million a sales estimate derived from it.

In 80 Level’s English rendering, Yang said, “Familiarity and strangeness form a scale,” referring to how audiences overseas may respond to cultural elements that are unfamiliar to them. The outlet links to the full interview in Chinese, but the English wording and complete context have not been independently verified here, so the sentence should be understood as 80 Level’s translation and attribution.
