Colin Porch reportedly began the sequel in 1989, shelved it, and completed it for release by Thalamus Digital on 4 May 2026. That makes it an extraordinary development story, but the available evidence does not prove it is the longest video-game project ever.
The game behind the 37-year headline
Return to Blacktooth: A Head Over Heels Adventure is a sequel to the 1987 isometric puzzle-adventure Head Over Heels. Colin Porch is credited with the sequel’s design and programming. Thalamus Digital describes the finished game as an old-school isometric arcade adventure and a spiritual successor to the original, combining room-by-room exploration with puzzles and traps.

The project reportedly started in 1989, was shelved, and eventually reached the public in 2026. Counting the calendar years from 1989 to 2026 produces the familiar “37 years” framing. Because no precise start day in 1989 is documented in the cited material, “about 37 years” or “reported as 37 years” is more accurate than claiming 37 complete years to the day.

Return to Blacktooth’s documented timeline
| Year or date | What is documented | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1987 | Head Over Heels is released. | It establishes the original game and the series context for the later sequel. |
| 1989 | Colin Porch reportedly begins work on Return to Blacktooth. | This is the starting year used for the 37-year calculation. |
| After the start | The sequel project is shelved. | The elapsed period includes an interruption rather than 37 years of documented continuous production. |
| 4 May 2026 | Thalamus Digital lists version 1.0 downloads for Atari ST and Amiga. | This is the documented public release date for the completed editions. |
| 21 September 2026 | A Thalamus development-log update says physical-edition preorders will be opening soon. | The update confirms an announced physical edition, but not that orders are currently open or what the final package contains. |
1987: the starting point is Head Over Heels
The sequel’s long history makes sense only in relation to its predecessor. Head Over Heels arrived in 1987 and is the game’s explicit source of characters, setting and design lineage. Thalamus calls Return to Blacktooth a spiritual successor rather than presenting it as a modern remake of the original.
1989: a sequel begins, then stops
Secondary reporting places the beginning of production in 1989. The project was later shelved, so the 37-year figure describes the distance between the reported beginning and eventual release, not an uninterrupted 37-year coding effort. The sources do not establish exactly when development paused, how much work existed at each stage, or when production resumed.
2026: the project finally ships
On 4 May 2026, Thalamus published version 1.0 downloads for both Atari ST and Amiga. The listings identify the game as released software, provide platform-specific technical requirements and include files intended for emulators or original hardware. That release date is the endpoint used in the headline’s calculation.
Why the number is “about 37 years”
Calendar years are not a day-exact duration
Subtracting 1989 from 2026 gives 37 calendar years. It does not show that development began on 4 May 1989, or that the game was worked on every day until 4 May 2026. The documented start is a year, while the documented release is a specific date. The responsible wording is therefore “about 37 years” or “reported as 37 years.”

The span includes a shelving period
A shelved project is different from a game in uninterrupted production. A long gap can reflect changes in hardware, personal circumstances, financing, ownership, design direction or simply a decision to stop and return later. In this case, the available accounts establish that the sequel was shelved, but they do not provide a complete activity log. Readers should not interpret the headline as 37 years of continuous full-time development.
Is it really the longest video game development period ever?
That claim remains unverified. The sources document one unusually long project and explain the 1989-to-2026 calculation; they do not compare every game ever made or apply a common definition of “development period.” The question mark in “the longest ever?” is essential.
Different projects can produce radically different answers depending on what is measured. Some histories count the first concept, others the first playable build, formal production, public announcement or first commercial release. A title may be rebuilt from scratch, remain in early access for years, or spend most of its history dormant. Comparing those cases as though they were the same statistic would be misleading.

|---|---|
| When did development start? | A concept date, first prototype and first production build may be years apart. |
| Was the project continuously active? | A shelved game has a different production history from one worked on without a major break. |
| Was the released game substantially rebuilt? | A later version may preserve a title or premise while replacing most earlier work. |
| What counts as release? | Early access, a limited test, a digital launch and a boxed edition can have different dates. |
| Are the projects being compared on the same basis? | A sequel gap should not be treated as equivalent to uninterrupted development time. |
Because no systematic survey or independently established record table accompanies the 37-year claim, it should be presented as a striking timeline for Return to Blacktooth, not as a proven world record.

What kind of game is Return to Blacktooth?
Isometric arcade-adventure design
Thalamus characterizes the game as an old-school isometric arcade adventure. The viewpoint presents rooms as angled, three-dimensional-looking spaces while the underlying play remains a puzzle-and-exploration challenge. The description emphasizes traps, puzzles and exploration rather than modern role-playing systems or an open-world structure.
More than 300 rooms
The publisher lists “300+ rooms.” That figure is a product-description claim from Thalamus, not an independently measured level count. It indicates a large collection of spaces to navigate, with progress built around solving problems and finding routes through the environment.
A sequel and spiritual successor
The connection to Head Over Heels is central to the game’s identity. It is designed for players interested in the older game’s style and lineage, while still being presented as a complete release for contemporary owners of Atari ST and Amiga hardware or compatible emulators.

| Computer | Atari ST with 1 MB of RAM |
| Operating environment | GEM/TOS |
| ST system version | TOS 1.04 UK |
| STE system version | TOS 1.06 UK |
| Sound | Enhanced sound on Atari STE |

| Download formats | ST and PRG files |
| Version date | Version 1.0 dated 4 May 2026 |
The listing includes instructions for using the files with an emulator or on real Atari hardware. The 1 MB memory requirement and specified UK TOS versions are the publisher’s compatibility targets; they should not be treated as results from an independent hardware test. Owners of other TOS revisions or non-UK system configurations should check the supplied instructions before assuming compatibility.
Amiga edition: requirements and loading options
The official Amiga listing specifies a different memory arrangement and loading path:
| Item | Publisher specification |
|---|---|
| Memory | 512 KB Chip RAM plus 512 KB of other RAM |
| Play media | Playable from floppy disk |
| Hard-drive or modern loading option | WHDLoad 20.0 or later |
| Version date | Version 1.0 dated 4 May 2026 |
The Amiga requirements describe a total memory configuration split between Chip RAM and other RAM, rather than simply stating a single undifferentiated number. WHDLoad 20.0 or later is listed as a supported option for players who use a hard-drive installation or a compatible modern setup. As with the Atari information, these are the publisher’s stated requirements, not a claim that every Amiga model or accelerator configuration has been tested.

What is known about a physical edition?
Thalamus has announced a physical version for both platform listings. A development-log entry dated 21 September 2026 says physical-edition preorders “will be opening soon,” and the product pages likewise describe the physical version as coming soon. Those statements establish an announced product, not a confirmed open order window, final boxed contents or a verified retailer listing.
If you want a boxed copy, check the publisher’s current product page and the latest development update for the live preorder status. Do not assume that a listing described as “coming soon” has already shipped or that its packaging, disk format and extras are finalized.
Why this development story matters
The interest in Return to Blacktooth is not only the arithmetic. It shows how a project from the 16-bit home-computer era can remain identifiable decades after its original start, survive a shelving period and eventually be completed for the same broad hardware families that inspired it. The release also illustrates why development duration needs context: a calendar gap can contain inactivity, preservation work, redesign and a later return to the original idea.
For players, the result is unusually specific. This is a new, released adventure tied to a 1987 property, available in Atari ST and Amiga formats, with more than 300 rooms and requirements aimed at original systems or emulation. For historians, the important distinction is between a documented timeline and a universal record. The former is supported here; the latter is not.
The accurate answer to the headline question
The game associated with “37 years” is Return to Blacktooth: A Head Over Heels Adventure. Its sequel project reportedly began in 1989, was shelved, and reached version 1.0 release on 4 May 2026, producing a reported span of about 37 calendar years. That makes it one of the most remarkable documented delays in game development, but the available evidence does not establish it as the longest development period ever.
