Many Nintendo Switch games work offline once they’re available on the console, but not every game or feature does. Single-player and same-console games are good candidates; cloud versions need internet, and a digital game’s license setup can determine whether it launches offline. Check the game’s online-feature notes and prepare the console before you leave Wi-Fi.
Which Nintendo Switch games can you play offline?
Look for games whose core mode is single-player or local play on one console, then confirm the specific title’s online requirements. Nintendo says eShop listings and game product information identify online requirements and features. A one-player label is a useful clue, not a guarantee that every mode, launch check, update, or add-on works offline.

Two examples of single-system games are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, listed for one player, and Super Mario Odyssey, listed for one to two players on one system. These are solo or same-console candidates; check each listing’s current online-feature information and your digital-game license before traveling.
What can stop a game from working without Wi-Fi?
Digital license checks
For digital purchases, offline access depends on how the software is licensed on your console. Nintendo says all users on a console can play software offline when its virtual game card is loaded there. If you use online-license play without a loaded virtual game card, the console needs an internet connection. Nintendo also says access to purchased digital games on a non-primary console requires an active internet connection. See Nintendo’s software-start troubleshooting guidance and digital game purchase information.

Cloud versions
Cloud versions stream the game from a server rather than downloading the full game to the console, so they require a stable internet connection. Nintendo warns that an unstable connection can interrupt play. A cloud version is not an offline option, even if the title is otherwise a single-player game. Read Nintendo’s Cloud Versions FAQ.
Online modes and connected features
Online multiplayer and other network features need a connection. Nintendo Switch Online is required for many games’ online play, with exceptions; the game’s listing explains its requirements. A game may still have an offline core mode while online multiplayer, cloud saves, downloads, or particular downloadable content are unavailable. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online FAQ and the title’s product information.

Nintendo Classics
Games in the Nintendo Classics collections are tied to an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and periodic online verification. Nintendo says it is possible to play these games offline for up to seven consecutive days before connecting online again. This seven-day window applies to Classics access, not to every purchased Switch game. See the Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ.
How to prepare a Switch game for a trip
- Check the game’s eShop listing. Review its online features and requirements; do not assume that a single-player label guarantees offline launch.
- Confirm digital access on the console you’ll bring. If you rely on a virtual game card, make sure it is loaded on that console. If you use online-license play or a non-primary console, plan for the required connection.
- Launch the game while you are still online. This is a prudent check for sign-in, membership, or license prompts before travel, not a guarantee that every game will remain playable offline indefinitely.
- Check what you need beyond the core game. Updates, downloadable content, online modes, and other connected features may have different requirements.
How to turn on Airplane Mode
Airplane Mode turns off wireless communication; it does not make an online-required game compatible with offline play. Nintendo says the setting is available in handheld or tabletop mode, not TV mode.
