The Konami Code works in specific games and versions—not in every Konami game. Its first documented appearance was in the Famicom version of Gradius in 1986, where it powers up your ship; Contra is its best-known extra-lives example. Other games in series such as Dance Dance Revolution, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Castlevania have also featured or referenced it, but the exact titles and effects vary.
Which games are known for the Konami Code?
The code is usually written as ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A. That sequence is a useful starting point, not a universal command: a game may accept it only on a particular platform or release, at a particular screen, or not at all. Some games include an actual input that changes gameplay; others merely make a reference to the code.
| Game or series | What is established | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Gradius (Famicom, 1986) | Konami identifies it as the code’s first appearance. Entering the command powers the player’s machine up to almost its strongest equipment. Konami’s anniversary history | A documented gameplay effect in the named game and platform. |
| Contra | A widely known use of the sequence grants extra lives. GameSpot’s overview | Confirm the specific release and platform before relying on an exact input or result. |
| Dance Dance Revolution, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Castlevania | These series have games that feature or reference the code, according to the same GameSpot overview. | Series-level examples only; this does not mean every entry accepts the sequence. |
Konami dates the Famicom Gradius release to April 25, 1986. Its history says the code has appeared many times since, but does not provide a complete title-by-title list. The examples above are therefore representative, not exhaustive.
What does the code do?
The result depends on the game. In Gradius, it is a power-up command. In Contra, it is associated with extra lives. In later games, a recognized input may instead unlock something or trigger an Easter egg; in other cases, the code may be mentioned without being usable as a command. Do not assume one game’s effect carries over to another.

How to check whether it works in a particular game
- Identify the exact release. Note the game title, platform, region and edition. A franchise name alone is not enough to establish support.
- Find out whether it is a working input or a reference. Look for title-specific confirmation that the game accepts the sequence, rather than a general claim that the franchise has used the code.
- Check where and how to enter it. The required screen or moment, and the controls used for the directional and button inputs, can depend on the game and controller.
- Confirm the result for that version. A power-up, extra lives, an unlock and a visual joke are different outcomes; do not infer the effect from another game.
The available examples do not establish exact entry instructions for every release in the named franchises. If a specific game is not documented, treat the code as unverified for that version rather than assuming it will work.
Is there a complete list?
There is no complete, verified list here of every game, platform and release that accepts the input. Konami describes the code as appearing “countless times,” but that is a broad characterization, not a measured count or a catalogue. A reliable claim needs to identify the individual game and distinguish an accepted command from a reference.
