For a current Xbox Series X|S setup, you need the console, an Xbox version of Just Dance, and a way to control the dancing. Ubisoft lists its Just Dance Controller app for motion scoring and an Xbox Wireless Controller for menu navigation. The app method requires a compatible smartphone. You do not need to buy a Kinect for current Series X|S editions.
Equipment for Xbox Series X|S
- An Xbox Series X or Series S console and a compatible Xbox edition of Just Dance.
- A compatible smartphone if you want to use the Just Dance Controller app to score movement. Install and use the app as directed for your edition.
- An Xbox Wireless Controller for menu navigation. Ubisoft lists it separately from the phone app, which is the motion-scoring method.
- Internet access and a Ubisoft account for the requirements Ubisoft states for Just Dance 2024 on Series X|S. Internet is needed for initial setup and use of the dedicated controller app; Ubisoft says an account is necessary to play. Check the requirements for the specific edition you plan to use.
Ubisoft’s supported-peripherals list for Just Dance 2024 Edition identifies the Just Dance Controller app and Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox controller’s listed role is menu navigation, not motion scoring.

Does Just Dance 2026 require a phone?
Not necessarily. Ubisoft’s October 6, 2025 Version 26.0.0 patch notes say Camera Controller Mode is out of beta and stable for regular use in Just Dance 2026 Edition. The mode uses the Just Dance Controller app, and Ubisoft says all choreographies from Just Dance 2025 and 2026 are compatible with it. The phone is therefore needed for that app-based method, but it is not universal equipment if you choose another supported way to play. Confirm the compatible control options for your exact edition before buying accessories.
Do you need Kinect?
Kinect is an edition-specific legacy option, not a general requirement for Xbox Just Dance. Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2022 peripheral listing includes Xbox One Kinect and the Just Dance 2016–22 Controller App; the app method requires a compatible smartphone. That listing does not establish Kinect support for current Series X|S editions. Buy Kinect only if you are setting up a compatible older Xbox One game and have confirmed support for that edition.

Xbox One and Series X|S are different setups
Do not assume a peripheral listed for an older Xbox game works with a newer edition. Check both the console generation and the game edition when choosing how to control play.

Online play, setup, and buying the game
Hardware requirements are separate from online-feature requirements. Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2024 FAQ says Series X|S players need internet for setup and use of the dedicated controller app, and a Ubisoft account is necessary to play. It also describes the Xbox game as code-in-a-box, with an internet connection required for redemption.

For editions 2023–2026, Ubisoft’s online-requirements information, updated October 5, 2026, says multiplayer features and Just Dance+ require a linked Ubisoft account, stable internet, and an Xbox Game Pass subscription for console. Those requirements apply to the named online features; they are not an additional motion-control device.

- Buy the Xbox edition of Just Dance that matches your console generation.
- If you want the app-based control method, use a compatible smartphone you already own or obtain one that meets the app’s compatibility requirements.
- Use an Xbox Wireless Controller for menu navigation where Ubisoft lists it for your edition.
- Do not buy Kinect for current Series X|S play based on an Xbox One peripheral listing.
Before checkout, confirm the console generation, exact game edition, regional product listing, and app compatibility. Ubisoft notes that adaptive and other input devices may not be officially supported; consult the edition’s support information if you rely on a nonstandard controller.
