Gamescom’s scale is a strong sign that players and the games business remain engaged, but it is not proof that the industry has broadly recovered. The 2026 event drew 368,000 visitors, more than 36,000 trade visitors and 1,743 exhibiting companies. Those numbers show reach and participation; revenue growth and job conditions tell a more complicated story.
Gamescom shows engagement, not a recovery by itself
Gamescom and Koelnmesse reported 368,000 visitors from 131 countries, more than 36,000 trade visitors and 1,743 exhibiting companies from 66 countries for Gamescom 2026. The event also recorded 624 million digital views. These edition-specific figures indicate substantial audience attention and business presence, but they measure activity around an event—not industry-wide revenue, studio finances or employment. That distinction was central to Dean Takahashi’s August 24, 2024 DeanBeat account, updated June 18, 2025. He described crowds, more than 1,400 exhibitors, activity at Devcom and a pipeline of upcoming releases as signs of life after a difficult period. In that 2024 article, Maximum Entertainment CEO Christina Seelye offered a prediction, not a confirmed outcome: “I think by the end of the year, we are at the end of the significant reductions,” she said. It should be understood as her view at the time, not as an assessment of current hiring or industry health. DeanBeat interview

Revenue evidence points to a rebound with caveats
Omdia reported that games content and service revenue, including advertising, grew 0.6% in 2024. That is a positive result, but modest growth alone does not establish a durable recovery. Omdia’s March 2025 market analysis
Omdia forecast 7.9% growth in the same revenue category for 2025, with the outlook tied in part to the Switch 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI. That figure was a forecast, not a confirmed result. Release-driven growth is not the same as a lasting turnaround
A major release slate can lift spending in a given period, but it does not by itself show that growth will persist once those releases pass. Omdia identified AI, user-generated content, hardware, VR/XR and games companies applying their capabilities in other entertainment areas as possible growth drivers, while noting there was no widespread agreement on which could materially change the market’s trajectory. Employment remains a warning against declaring victory
GDC’s 2026 State of the Game Industry survey included more than 2,300 professionals. Twenty-eight percent said they had been laid off in the preceding two years; the share was 33% among US respondents. GDC said the survey platform and question set had changed, and that questions were customized by participant role. It therefore avoided year-on-year comparisons. The percentages are useful evidence of continuing strain among respondents, but they should not be treated as directly comparable with results from an earlier survey. - Audience and business interest: visitor, trade-visitor, exhibitor and digital-view counts show that Gamescom attracts substantial attention and participation.
- Market performance: reported revenue growth is a separate measure; Omdia’s 2024 result was modest, while its stronger 2025 figure was a forecast.
- Workforce health: GDC’s survey indicates layoffs remain a real concern among respondents, with methodological limits that prevent direct year-on-year comparison.
- Durability: a lasting recovery would require growth to continue beyond a small number of major releases and clearer evidence of sustained drivers.
On that evidence, Gamescom is a useful barometer of engagement and resilience, not a standalone test of whether the game industry has returned to durable growth. Its crowds and exhibitors matter—but they need to be read alongside revenue results, employment conditions and the strength of future growth drivers.
